What I do when I'm just clearing it normally, after getting all the pods on the map, is to set up my squadsight snipers on the roof of the south-western boat (with a clear line of sight to both the hole in the side of the whale ship and the upper deck) protected by an assault in case of random shark/waterlids. The rest set up in a firing line along that last dock before the ship and overwatch while the scout makes his run on the top. I've actually cleared it that way with a single sniper and three supports with the default ballistic assault rifles in LW, plus the assault and scout.

So I just purchased Enemy Within.  I already beat the vanilla game, and I was wondering if I should try playing Enemy Within with Long War or unmodded.  Thoughts?

Just get Long War. There's no reason I can think of to play without.

Either one would work.

EW fixes some of the issues with the original, snipers feel more balanced and the difficulty curve makes more sense even though it hasn't been completely fixed.  LW is very well received but you're going to have to play for a while before you get to see the original EW features like MECs.

As far as I'm concerned, Long War is simply better. However, it changes a lot of things. So you're probably going to fail the first couple campaigns while you get a grasp of things. Watching some of Beaglerush's video might be a good way to speed up the learning process.

That said, Long War is also actually much easier early on, partly because it shifts the difficulty curve to be an actual upward curve instead of a steep cliff which peaks at "lasers researched" and then turns into EZmodo for the rest of the game, and partly because of flashbangs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I remember playing Long War when there was that bug where every single soldier would permanently be injured / stressed. It was amusing. I didn't realize it wasn't supposed to be like that. I got all the way until the point where the game had me fight 23 thin men at the same time. I think it was that DLC China mission.

So in honor of nuCOM 2, I got back into my last LW campaign. It's mid-October and I get a heavy-activity abduction. My A-team and B-team are both on break/in the medbay, and my C-team just got back from a nasty EXALT raid. I only have three soldiers ready for action, a second-from-max rank Captain Infantry, a TSGT Gunner, and a LCPL Sniper, but fortunately I've got a shipment of rookies due just before the deadline. They arrive with less than an hour to spare. I've been running so many missions that I don't even have enough armor for them all.

I get in-mission, things proceed as usual, and here's what I turn out to be up against. Three pods: a) 2x Mechtoid, 4x Sectoid; b) 1x Leader Thin Man, 4x Thin Man; c) 1x Heavy Floater, 4x Floater. With one good operator, two meh ones, and five completely raw rookies. No deaths! Still got it, bay-bee! Yeah, a couple of the new guys are going to be spending a month recovering, but who cares?

I actually like to take rooks on missions in LW. Maybe it's the swanky red uniforms, but I basically barely gives a shit about them. Who's going to clear that overwatch? The rook. Who's the point man? The rook. Who will attempt that really risky flank? The rook.

I got plenty of the critters in the barrack anyway.

And here I made all my rookies wear the pink and blue armor.

Frankly, you lads should give a try to Xenonauts & mods like X-Division for example. It's like an improved version of the old UFO games, and there are some awesome mods for it, like the one which I linked previously. [Here is a random review: http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/xenonauts-review/1900-6415810]
Anyway I am going to try this Long War mod, it looks decent, hopefully it greatly enhances the basic game, because I never liked it that much.

Actually, pretty sure I played Xenonauts back when it was free and browser-based. Or something similar to it, at least, with the same "oldCom with the serial numbers filed off and modestly improved graphics" feeling, and it was pretty fun.

..Xenonauts used to be free and browser-based?

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

I distinctly remember playing a browser-based X-Com clone, and my memory says that it was called Xenonauts or something very similar.

Of course my memory says a lot of silly things.

I remember hearing that there was an X-Com clone on the browser, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Xenonauts.

Huh. I'm too lazy to find out, though.
