You either can't or shouldn't, depending on how they coded the game.  The problem is that launch rocket is both an ability AND a secondary.  This means that either gaining launch rocket would lose you a pistol, OR that prior to gaining the ability to launch a rocket the heavy would be carrying an empty rocket launcher around.  Or the game just explodes because you gave it a case it doesn't know how to deal with.
That's awfully defeatist.

No, the obvious error is that gunslinger is listed twice.  I edited the second sentence in without thinking about how it read with the first :/
I think there are some other pretty big errors...

Quote
No, they don't.  If lightning reflexes were replaced with literally nothing, assaults would still be balanced with supports and heavies (although not snipers, of course).  Hell, an assault Colonel with nothing but Run and Gun, Rapid Fire, and Resilience would still have a place on my team.
They need it a heck of a lot more than classes whose M.O. isn't "Run at the enemies and shoot".

Quote
But how are they still a sniper if the optimum build is a close-range pistolier?
They aren't.  Changing the class name is more modding than I'd be capable of.
So...um...dunno what to say about this.

In fact and here's the beauty of it, if you reduce the snipers aim growth you stop getting free 100% hits all the time, making it that you need to either position on high ground to get those tricky shots off, or opt for mobility and getting in closer for an aim bonus from flanking/aiming angles (wich really should be a default setting imo).
Just butting in, but I have never gotten a sniper with a 100% shot. Assaults, sure. Supports, sometimes. Heavies, once in a blue moon. Snipers? Nope.

How about just introducing an accuracy penalty for targets in Squadsight?
Makes sense.

On the other hand, I've gotten quite a few cases where my snipers get 100% shot chance. Sniper Cpl with SCOPE equipped, on top of a roof with Squadsight and DGG against a couple of sectoids - 100% hit chance get. With my playthroughs so far, it's usually the sniper who's in charge of clearing out alium threats before they start stacking up on the squad.

If I wanted to pick up one of the original games, which one should I get?

X-Com:UFO Defense.  Terror from the Deep is basically the same as UFO Defense except more difficult and more frustrating.

I'm not familiar with the other X-Com games but those two above are the turn based ones.

As Bouchart mentioned, Terror from the Deep is just a harder reskin of the original game. Great if you want more content... or want a burning fear of cruise ship closets.

Apocalypse is also fun. Similar to the original games, though it includes the option of a real-time combat system (alongside the old turn-based alternative). Adds a bunch of other cool features, like better aerial combat and faction interactions. It's honestly my favourite of the bunch.

Interceptor is a dogfighting sim, and is very mediocre. Nothing like the previous games.

Enforcer is not to be touched with a ten foot pole.

The original is X-Com is compatible with OpenXcom, so get that one. TFTD, while I like the aesthetic and enemies more, is not improved enough to overwhlem OpenXcom.

Also, there's an older game from about a decade or so ago called UFO: Aftermath.  It's not by Microprose or Firaxis, but it's essentially a real time version of X-Com.  I find it a bit repetitive, though.

It's got it's flaws, but UFO Aftermath was a surprisingly enjoyable game.

Except the voices.

Sweet Christ the voices.

...You've never had a sniper with 100% to hit? I feel very sorry for you.
I my current game, (not the forum one I'm doing) I actually have a sniper who's actually gotten 100% to hit and 100% critical without headshot being used.
Granted, I got lucky with Training Roulette and they managed to roll Aggression as one of their abilities, and Reaper Rounds on a sniper do wonders, but still, it's possible.
Also, that EXALT agent just happened to spawn in a horrible spot with aiming angles on.
Oh, and they did not have the higher ground, by the way.

Hell, at least it had accents beyond american, though, which makes it a nice change from the majority of games (especially the new Xcom, though they did fix it a bit with Enemy Within.)

The first thing thing that comes to mind when UFO Aftermath's voices are mentioned to me is the french male "Thees doesnotluk gud" when he gets shot. Still the rest of it is fun in my opinion.

Holy crap, I just went though a week (game week) of utter terror in my current Classic game.

I only had laser rifles and pistols, nothing else, and I went through the mission with the massive amount of melee enemies (spoilerz?), a very difficult abduction mission, a UFO landed mission, and an EXALT mission. In roughly one week. My men are so worn down now.

First, the melee enemy mission:

The abduction mission:

The UFO mission:

And finally, the EXALT mission:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can't take any more missions. This week was absolutely crushing. I need a break or I'm in grave trouble. I can't even raise a squad of 6 soldiers anymore, everyone's wounded. My veterans are depleted so badly.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

EXALT were highly disappointing. Their AI didn't seem to good and I have never lost a soldier to them.
