SHIVs can't take cover, which is necessary to operate the node as well as some other things.

It's a vehicle that is designed to stand-in for infantry, and it's super heavy because it's standard armament is a fucking minigun.

Right.. the cover thing does make sense.

And I'd hazard a guess that one reads SHIV as "super-heavy-infantry vehicle" :P

EDIT: does its armour add to its superheaviness too?

I usually choose to see it not as "Super Heavy" "Infantry Vehicle", because that implies an IFV of some sort, but as a "Super Heavy Infantry" Vehicle, a vehicle that acts as super-heavy infantry. Makes more sense that way.

Super Heavy Infantry Vehicle.
That's one of my problems with SHIVs.  THIS is a super heavy-
Spoiler: Mammoth Tank (click to show/hide)
I would of liked them a bit more if they could at least mount heavy weapons like in the old XCOM, capable of destroying large amounts of terrain, or if you could have more troops.  Also, they were truly named because they are tiny and can be used to stab alliums.
But really, you can't call yourself superheavy if going around a building or through the door is quicker then going through it.

Infantry, not artillery.
Same rules apply.  A beserker can go through a building.  A MEC trooper can go through a building.  A SHIV can't.

I think we all see the magnitude of the problem here. SHIVs are too light, actual super-heavy vehicles aren't going to fit on the Skyranger, and MECs still have squishy parts.

Gentlemen, we need a new class of weapon, a missing link, a metal gear to bridge the gap between infantry and artillery. And with us using their fancy toys, those xeno scum will regret ever setting foot upon the pale blue dot.

A MEC is super-heavy infantry. A SHIV is a tiny vehicle with comparable firepower. That SHIVs can't do what a MEC can do is solely ingame problems, but for all intents and purposes, a SHIV is super-heavy infantry.

Also, it can't just be called a "Heavy Infantry Vehicle". because you'll never have any luck with that acronym.

I wish modding X-Com was more feasible, so you could attach mech upgrades to SHIVs, like flamethrowers, proximity mine launchers, and grenade launchers. Or rocket launchers.
