I'm going to be playing my first Normal game since my first game of Enemy Unknown so I can actually see the new stuff in Enemy Within without spending a dozen hours trying to get a game where I'm not crushed by Thin Mints. Given that I've only played on Classic and Impossible otherwise, this should be...interesting. My best Classic games were when I stepped down from Impossible, so I expect this will be a total annihilation on my part.

Goddammit, why do I keep running out of video memory when I assault the alien base?

What does that even mean?

Graphics cards have their own memory for holding things.

Basically the game is loading too many textures and it can't fit them all into memory. I haven't taken a look into the options menu, but look around for a texture quality option and see if turning it down helps.

Wait, you...you are a much better XCOMmander than I.

It's already on the lowest settings.
GODDAMN IT COMPUTER YOU'RE NEWER THAN THE GAME WHAT THE HELL.

...For some reason, it seems to kick in whenever I switch to Zander. Let's see if I can avoid doing that.
EDIT: Nope.

Check what brand and model of video card you have. Go the website of the card's manufacturer and download the latest drivers for your OS. Delete the current drivers through the "add/remove programs" dialog. Install the new drivers.

Well, there's always the old-fashioned option of popping your tower open and looking at the label on the GPU, but let's attempt software means first.

One way is pressing the Windows key and R, bringing up the Run dialog, and running dxdiag. Once the program opens, the name of the videocard, at least as the OS sees it, will be at the top on the "Display" tab, along with the driver version.

Especially since I'm on a laptop...

Alright. Step 1 complete. Step 2 complete. Step 3...unable to find anything like that.

No, the rewards are integral to your progression.

Not if you want to progress.

You technically don't need to remove the old drivers, but it's a strong recommendation.

Nevertheless, if you can't find the original ones, just run the installer for the new ones. Setting a system restore point would be prudent in that case, however.

Gorram it.

I was counting "Find Website" as Step 2 and "Find/Install" new drivers as Step 3.

Speaking of game issues, I once had the game crash repeatedly at the same point when I was trying to stun a Muton at 1hp with the only trooper who brought an arc thrower.

Got pissed off with the lack of progression and decided to kill the Muton outright. Everything went smoothly after that.

@crazysheep:
I had that same problem when attempting to stun a Muton, as well.  Every time I tired the stun, XCOM crashed to desktop, then I decided to delay it one turn, the Muton moved to a different square and I successfully stunned it then.
The only thing I could think of was that there was already a stunned Muton on the previous square - perhaps XCOM has an issue with this sort of thing, ie, two stunned bodies on the same location.

I could have tried that, but I didn't want to risk it lol. Anyway, I can't go back and check the save because I overwrote it :3
