You're thinking of the original game.  They were more vulnerable to lasers than plasma (as opposed to everything else in the game).  They also fired lasers.  Since they were 4 tile units, there was this weird quirk where you could mind control a quarter of the Sectopod and then shoot it to death with its own lasers.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

It also helpfully, like other four-tile units, took blast damage from explosives four times. I think that's the main reason for them being so easy in the original game.

I don't think you could say they or cyberdiscs were easy in the original, of course once you had psi-amps everything was super easy from there on.

They weren't "easy" by and large, but their appearance wasn't quite as much of an "oh, crap" moment in the mission the way the appearance of chryssalids usually was. A cyberdisk or sectopod could be taken down by simple concentrated fire and gratuitous application of grenades (well, perhaps not in the latter's case), and it was rare to see more than one or two or four per mission. The large number of troops available made it even easier to gang up on them, and unlike the new XCOM versions, their large size actually made them easier targets, as they should be. Here, you never have much of a numeric advantage to begin with, they both are hardened, can't be poisoned, don't panic even on fire, and have area attacks that they use with gleeful eagerness. Oh, and the new Sectopod also effectively has twice the shown health, since it only takes half damage from any sources in Enemy Within. And enters automatic overwatch after firing.

So yes. The old Sectopods and Cyberdisks were easy in comparison.

Hah, concentrated firepower only does so much against cyberdiscs in original because unless you are firing off rockets they would pretty much shrug off anything you threw at them, in new XCOM though they just need a few shots to go down while in original they would need many, and you would normally face 3 of them just on easy mode. A sectoid first terror mission in original was very dangerous.

Anyway Original XCOM and new XCOM are pretty different games so it's hard to really compare enemies directly, but from personal experience I find the old cyberdiscs more terrifying especially early game more then the new cyberdsics.

To be really fair, the soldiers of the new XCOM have nothing on the sheer bullet output capacity of the soldiers of the old X-COM. Laser Rifles, and even Laser Pistols (which you almost certainly have by the time you're facing cyberdisks) firing full auto will fill the enemy with more holes than the MECs could if their miniguns actually fired like miniguns. Plus you never need to reload the Lasers. Compared to XCOM, where you can usually squeeze off only one shot per soldier per turn...

Even with Laser Rifles, in the new XCOM you need three to four solid hits on the thing before it goes down, and that's on Normal. Plus it has Drones repairing it. That's either half your squad firing for two turns, or all of your squad firing at once, just for the one Cyberdisk. The old X-COM had more in the way of randomness, but you could easily-ish take the damn thing down at short range with two soldiers firing laser pistols on auto.

But I digress. XCOM is really just a very different kind of game. Just the sheer audacity of only having one Skyranger is different enough...

I loathe the old cyberdisks, SUCH BIG DEATHSPLOSIONS!

Though I miss having the large squad sizes, outfitted with explosives, incendiaries and lasers. Leveling the entire map was so satisfying.

Oh man. The base defence mission gives you 0 warning. I just finished a very difficult mission that ended up with all of my best soldiers in the infirmary. Next thing I know I'm defending my base with squaddies that have the basic equipment.  :'(

I'm loving Enemy Within though. I love that there are so many new maps.

Cyberdiscs were mainly hard if you got a sectoid terror mission early on (as opposed to the MUCH easier floater terror mission).  The explosions weren't a problem after you knew it would happen, and against even lasers weapons they would go down to a few hits.  Also their guns weren't any deadlier than the other aliens, actually less so since they couldn't carry grenades.

Of course if you get a sectoid terror mission early, then you could also get the fun of facing first month psi powers, which is so much harder than cyberdiscs.  Oldcom Psi Powers are straight up bullshit, they ignore line of sight and the only defenses against them are AI exploits and a stat you can't see until you've already captured a psi capable alien.

Oh yea I get that, I was just frustrated to get a game over when I was otherwise doing pretty well because my soldiers didn't use any of the gear I had so I was facing the base invasion with basic kit. I know better now. I always make sure the soldiers at the top of the active soldiers list have the best stuff equipped until the base invasion happens.

For reference, I believe it can only happen after you assault the alien base and destroy it. So, you can breath easy until then, or still equip your soldiers in paranoia.

Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.
