Gah! DAMN YOU STEAM CHRISTMAS SAAAAALE!!!

I just bought this game too. Half-life 2 was a little bit of a disappointment, and I don't think Skyrim will hold my attention for ever. Looking forward to booting up my first firaxis game in a while later on tonight.

Just finished my EW play through. Love mechs, hate genemods. Can genemod soldiers sucker punch a berserker? No, no they can't. Do they have fire breath? No, but they should.

I also really appreciate the diminished presence of Chryssalids on EW missions (except the OMG RUN! OH DEAD GAWD NO!!! Mission which I was totally not prepared for.)

Can a SHIV really be as good as all my max ranked gene'd up assault and heavy troopers? Also I am considering leaving the squad sight sniper out of the last fight, since I think I will constantly have to reposition him.

I am just waiting for one extra large UFO so I can get the last of the techs before I finish the game.

Yes, SHIVs really are that good. They can heal back to full whereas gene-modded soldiers can only heal up to at max like 7-9 health, depending on how much health they have before armor. On top of being almost as tanky as MECs and having aim roughly equivalent (or maybe even better?) than a Major Heavy. Assaults still have their uses with Lightning Reflexes and the close-range shotguns, but SHIVs are really powerful all-rounders with plasma and the self-repair tech. On top of also functioning as moving low cover or flying saucers.

Also, it's no big deal if you lose a SHIV, especially lategame if you have lots of satellites and alloys, meaning you can almost freely use them as frontline units. Losing a max rank soldier hurts a lot more, especially if you've used Meld on them to make them for gene-mods/MEC augmentation. If I'm not mistaken, their plasma cannon hurts more than the heavy plasma, too.

On top of what Knirisk said, SHIVs are really just incredibly well-rounded. They start out half-decent, assuming the Alloy SHIV - 9 move, 18 health, 70 aim. If you've gone for the full upgrades, the same SHIV has some 21 health, 12 move, suppression, infinite 2HP regen, close-quarters reaction, and 95 aim by the time you get Plasma, on top of its usual benefits of being a robot. Plus the hover SHIVs have twice the flight time of Archangel armor.

Of course, genemodded Colonels (or MEC Colonels... or even regular Colonels in some respects) in Titan or Archangel armor outshine them on the overall, but they're not really meant to replace the best of your best in all respects, are they? ;)

Darn. This is crashing for me after the splash screen. Maybe I can't play it with this onboard graphics card.

My tablet has an Intel HD4000 GPU. Plays fine, for a given meaning of "fine". Need to turn graphics options down and play at reduced resolution to get a good framerate, but it's not like framerate seriously matters for a TBS.

I'll try a re-install. I have a feeling it might just be messed up from when the installation was paused mid way.

SHIVs are also swell for more dangerous moves, like when you need to grab meld or disable a bomb charger in a council mission. Risk of aliens? Eh, the shiv can afford some damage.

EDIT: I cleared the base defense mission without restarting. I lost several good soldiers, including Zhang and one of my mec troopers, which sucks, but I beat it. Apparently I wasn't completely doomed like I thought I was.

No such luck. Looks like I'm not the only person having trouble.

My lappy meets the minimum requirements, so I'm not sure what else there is to do. Unfortunately I can't upgrade the bios because no upgrades are supported by NEC for this thing.

What exactly are your laptop's specs?

It's hard to be completly doomed on the base defense mission. The enemies are coming in in waves, and there are no timers anywhere so you can use tactical positioning and take your time.

My last base defense was an exercise in creative uses of base defense personnel. I think they finished off around a third of all the aliens thrown at me. Once I had a whole room of them open fire on Overwatch and tear apart a Cyberdisk.

Of course, the same mission had the hilarious situation where three of them and my Sniper took three turns to kill a single Drone...
