You know what I want?

I want interceptor combat to be a thing that goes on DURING missions. Maybe you shoot down a UFO and another UFO comes to guard it  AFTER your skyranger leaves. It begins bombing your troops but fortunately, your interceptor is there, taking a few shots at the UFO every turn.

Or maybe you have some troops in the skyranger, which you then lift off so you can send paratrooper reinforcements down

...ODSTs ready for deployment!  Who needs paratroopers when you can ride down hell's elevator straight towards the alien scum!
I would pay for an entire expansion if it gave me the ability to reserve troops for hot dropping.  Surrounded?  Drop a heavy behind their position.   Need a person to guard the VIP?  Drop an assualt or support.

I still support X-Com Team Racing being a future project.

Seconded. And why stop there? Why not a Mario Party equivalent, set at the site of alien incursions in sleepy small-town America?

Oh no, see, you can't just do that partway, what they need is an "Enemy Unknown" starting option in Civ 5 where the aliens show up around the year 2000 and it's only by killing enough of them and stealing alien science that you can tech the spaceship to Alpha Centauri – oh, and the aliens start coming in more and more and (for example) Songhai and Rome start falling to waves of cyberdisks so it's Alpha Centauri or bust for your faction.  :o

I have to ask, though... is space really the right place to run when escaping from invading aliens?  ;)

Where else ya gonna go... down? :D  I guess I'm presuming that you learn to match their tech but you obviously don't have their numbers.

Also an Alpha Centauri / Alien Crossfire remake where an alien faction is the X-Com aliens would be pretty great, I think. The latent psionic potential of humans is peanuts compared to Planet!

I support this fully. We need more games crossover/fusion!

Oh and why the hell not making the aliens a playable civ in multiplayer?

Better question: Why the hell aren't they making a new Alpha Centauri?

I think that there is a XCOM mod for Civ 5.

It depends! If they're only interested in the non-sentient resources, they might not give two dollops of grey excrement whether or not they systematically eradicate a lesser species far too primitive to pose a threat in the foreseeable future, and just let us emigrate. Or, they could be "ethically observant" conquerors, and graciously decide to relocate us to a tidy little collection of lunar reservations without fungal blooms. :P

First normal game: Just after the Van Horn extraction mission.

All but three soldier in the medbay. One squaddie and two captains left, making two assault, and one support. Alien abduction appears, giving me the choice of Moderate, Difficult and Very difficult. I went with Moderate, not wanting to put myself through a Difficult with only three soldiers. Had just gotten proper plasma rifles, so I threw them on, and hoped for the best.
Short story even shorter: I should have gone with the Difficult one.
Also, got Flight of the Valkyries totally by accident from that mission.

Impossible Ironman attempt ~12: made it through April for the first time. Doom tracker is at 5, we have 5 squad members all with carapace armour (2 Lt, 1 Cpl, 2 Sq) but only have enough alloy left for one laser rifle.
