I was holding off on researching elerium for a while... and then I find out improved stunners require that research...

I think my bad dreams were slightly prophetic :(

I lost two of my best Heavies on a cargo UFO mission. We faced at least 10 heavy floaters, two sectoid commanders, and a new enemy called a heavy/elite muton.

Casualties:
Every person wounded at least once, except for 'Combo', a support/psi user.
The unnamed heavy who went on the base assault, now a Major named 'Try Again'. Killed by one of the heavy floaters when they were attacking nonstop.
And in the final rounds of the battle, we lost 'Grande'. The heavy who has been with me throughout the entire game went down fighting two of these new Mutons at the same time. We captured his killer though, and we intend to be very strict with it...

I think it's pretty good.

It feels kinda like.... hrm... Well, the feeling is kinda like this:

1. Oh god this is really hard
2. Heh, I've got a handle on this now.
3. Yeah! I'm kicking ass and taking names! This war is as good as done!
4. Wait, what's this?

Repeat.

So you're constantly overcoming challenges and feeling good about it, but the game slaps you back into your place after that.

It is the game equivilant of climbing a mountain...

A mountain with spikes and laser beams.

I think this is how Apocalypse was set up too, at least until you understood the progression of the enemies. I am hoping with more practice we will find ways to get a little ahead of the curve.

Sectoids give you a bonus to beam (laser) research right? In that case it would probably make sense to research alien alloys (little longer life for your men), do the stun path, get a sectoid and then get lasers.

So far im on that lucky streak.. i made a few video, french tho, and im playing classic. If i remember right after 8 mission i didnt loose a single soldier ( exept the first 3 in the tutorial mission ). Lots of wounded but no death. so far in the game i didnt loose a single nation still... I even wondered if i was really on classic once and its on the video, episode 6 if im right.

Anyway just in case you are interested and speak french.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

What with the Ethereals and all, seems to me to be a bit more than coincidence.

Remember that the Aliens in Xcom and even this one tend to use actual aliens, videogame aliens, and movie aliens as inspiration.

It was likely the Cryssalid was based on the Alien from "Alien" originally. They resemble the Zerg now.

I was thinking more of the bugs from Starship Troopers, on the new ones.

I mean, look at us.  You give us a young child and a puppy, and we produce, possibly, one of the biggest sins against nature the game has ever seen.

I thought so, afterall very few Zergs have an insectile design. However corruption is something the Zergs do so I just assumed.

Well, Ethereals were in the first game too (and I drew my own parallels to WH40k in another thread, on just such a subject).  But it's also worth noting that the Tau were one of the few species without a presence in the Warp, and thus didn't have any psykers.  So exactly how well it matches up is another matter.

This game does seem to enjoy its references though, so I wouldn't be too surprised if you were on to something there.

Err...  What?  I've always thought the Zerg had lots of very bug-like designs.  Alright, so maybe not directly insectile, but still quite, uh...  buggy.
