At first the news about new X-com were nice, but I was skeptical from the beginning. The more I hear about it the more I don't like the idea. It just starts to sound like another dumbed down console port. I honestly think that the only good games nowadays are being made by Indie developers. I haven't seen a really good game from any of the major companies for a very long time. For comparison I have clocked 35 hours on Skyrim, and I have been playing Unreal World ( roguelike) for a week strait and I am loving it. I will not hold my breath for this one either. I am far more interested in Xenonauts or the new version of Ufo: Alien Invasion.
And of course the nev DF!!  :D

Could you elaborate on what makes it sound like a dumbed down console port, because right now all I'm hearing is "hurgh blurgh only indie game good"

They removed TPs or APs or whatever they were called. Shit.

The current method is basically the exact same thing but without tedious counting points.

no bloody mouth and a bulimia problem

That sounds like a horrible combination; forget "I have no mouth and I must scream.", "I have no mouth and I must spew" is the new living hell.

Well, that depends on how the implement it. A single Move + Action isn't the same as having TUs, since it doesn't allow for things like firing off your weapon multiple times in a round. However, if they add in abilities to classes that mimic a lot of those tactics (A machine-gunner role that can use their Move to fire off another burst, for instance) then it'll be functionally equivalent. One of the articles already mentioned the Sniper being able to forgo moving in order to do a Reaction fire, or something along those lines, so hopefully they're thinking about it.

In any case, I'm not overly worried about this aspect yet. As long as the combat is smooth and works well I don't care too much about the specific mechanics used.

Confirming Mutons are purple with green spandex "armor". Interceptor ret-conned them to be brownish with a purple tint, which was considerably less dumb.

I find the TU system in Xcom to be tedius at best, I think I will much prefer the new system.  It does seem to me like it allows me to do exactly what I did in a turn with TUs only I wont have to make sure I know how many TUs I am going through with each action.

So yeah I am really looking forward to this, 'tis about time a good developer got their hands on Xcom for a revival.

This has made me start playing through UFO Aftershock again, probablyfollowed by a few other Tactical games like Apoc and Silent Storm.

Uh, those green condoms were not "condoms". That was their very skin.

Check the autopsy report again. They were big pink guys wearing neon green tights.

Checked the wiki. It is something biological grafted on their skin. It is essentially their new skin.

The mutons were built to look intimidating. Sure, it may have looked weird to us, but still.

True, XCOM difficulty in the past threw a spanner in the RP thing if you ask me. I renamed my meatsh ... troopers, meaning family, friends and other peeps got splattered all over the place.
This would be why PC Zone's website already had an article tag for "graphically murdering the staff" when they did that DF Let's Play...
Do you have a link to that? I'd love to read it.

When you look at it from a gamers perspective they seemed stupid looking but if you imagine fighting something that is bright coloured and entirely capable of killing you without breaking a sweat it would be mindnumbingly terrifying.  So I say the stupid bright coloured superhero outfit was to intimidate their enemy...

The same argument applies to the new Muton designs. Longtime fans of X-COM classic may scoff at the power armor, but if those things were real...I wouldn't think badly of anyone pissing their pants when about to fight those.

That is one thing I miss when I play these other games like UFO, I don't have to worry about my guys wanting to cry in the corner when their buddies get shot.  They must only recruit those who have no fear of giant freakin aliens they haven't seen before who are intent on removing their torso from their limbs...
