what if this game shows X-Com as something experimental (at least in the beginning) with access to a huey chopper and an out of date MiG-29 (this is the future we're talking about), and that has yet to prove that they can take on aliens? the game could progress slowly from that huey to a friggin flying zeppelin fort of evil that flies with 300 miles per hour.

look, what i'm trying to say here is that maybe the game will make you slowly progress from a SWAT-team with fancy gear to a truly global organisation. but i'm holding on the last of my optimism straws here.

In either way, only an idiot would send four guys to combat 10-30 aliens.

But having only four guys in the beginning makes for a great gameplay and story progression as we get to field eight, and ultimately maybe even twelve guys against the final boss.

So what's the plan at this point?  We gave the actual things confirmed a modicum of discussion, so now we're extrapolating stuff out of the confirmed things and getting mad over shit we literally just made up?

Except we start with 4, and at least in the earlier x-com games you fought UFOs with 1-6 aliens for quite a while. Assuming they all survive the crash if you shot them down, of course.

Now remember how many guys one armed and bat-shit crazy human attracts. No matter what, the squad should always be full to prevent losses.

The 4-guys thing was written before, not made up. (wasn't it?  :-[)

there are some inconsistency with the xcom concept in itself, it's better not to try to rationalize it too much.

for example, they say that the squad is small because governs doesn't believe too much in the xcom project so you can't afford top of the line equipment and personnel, and yet they give you a full fledged underground base, two fighter jets, a transport large enough for  mechanized platforms and you get to keep all the equipment you find!

The four guys thing itself is confirmed, but you only start with four guys and you people have already mentally turned it into a dungeon crawler with a tank healer deps and shit.

That's irony. What we want to say is that it's very very very very very very and oh so much very unrealistic sending four guys against a force of extraterrestrials armed with fuck-noes-what.

Isn't X-COM supposed to technically be a secret organization in the first place? Sending a small army to Middle of Nowhere, Siberia, isn't the best way to maintain secrecy. In contrast, using a small team with regular small arms can be much more covert.

I don't find the idea of sending four guys against invading aliens any more absurd than the idea of aliens invading.  They don't know the capabilities of the aliens so why are they going to commit a bunch of guys?

Right now.  I'm opening up X-COM.  I'm going to play the first mission with four hand-picked soldiers.  We'll see how it goes.

It was night.  Floaters.  Reaction fire.   Point is, the thread is full of aggressive, baseless speculation.

I think if they can somehow cover up dozens (hundreds?) of civilians being butchered in terror attacks, they can somehow cover up an extra dozen soldiers going on a mission in the middle of nowhere.

Xcom being top secret was always kind of a plot hole in the first game, and that was before the internet was a big deal. Assuming the new one takes place in modern day... it's absurd to think they could keep the whole thing secret for very long.

also one more dumbed down thing I haven't seen mentioned... unlimited ammo.

Once terror attacks start hitting, the cat's out of the bag anyway. In the beginning though, X-COM and the alien activity is supposed to be hushed up. Sorta parodying the whole conspiracy theory about men in black.
