I don't know if that's concept art or not, but those were used as actual sprites in the freeware remake of the first game, X-COM: The Two Sides (which sadly has been put on hold due to legality issues. Too bad, because as far as i can tell TTS was a pretty faithful remake, only the sprites were updated and you could mod in the original EU sprites if you so desired).

On-topic, SQUEE! As far as i know Firaxis does actually trace back to MicroProse, so i see no reason why they'd fuck this up.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Seeing as in the bottom right corner it says ripped by Maxim, I'd say that they were used in the original game.

Um... It might be memory playing tricks on me, but I though those were the original sprites?

They are. That post was in response to someone disliking the generic space marine looking guy in the screenshot for the new game. The point being that the old game also had kind of generic looking warriors in armor with bulky rifles.

I could certainly sympathize with what Jake is saying, although perhaps not using space marines as comparison though. The armor the person is shown to be wearing in the first link is very generic. It's the standard football armor not so curiously lacking a helmet. There are better designs out there, but maybe the guys at Firaxis are simply using it as a blank substitute due to them not having decided what the art direction is supposed to be.

But I still think Jake's criticism is understandable. Even if the blandness was intentional, we could still critique it for that because there are better designs out there, and better designers too:

But mech suits would make it a non-X-COM game. A huge part of the original's charm is that it features normal people getting killed by the dozen. You don't start out with any real armor at all, and thus your redshirts had no defense against hot plasma death.

An interesting note, I think that the version of the screenshot in the RPS article -which had the marine cropped out- was far more atmospheric and evocative in my opinion. I happened to click on it first. It says "horror" where the other one says "action". XCOM was nothing if not scary.

Whether or not it would make an xcom game or not I think depends on the persepctive of the game: whether it should do something new or stay as true to the original as possible.

As you may have note, I did not say anything about the implementation of these suits and armor. I have not said that these things need come about at the beginning of the campaign where most of the forces are green horns.

In any case, you have missed a large part of the discussion. The argument centres around the mech suits, particularly what Jake saw as the powersuit featured in the first link. His problem with it was not that it was going to be in the early campaign, but that it didn't seem to try very hard at all other than looking like sports equipment.

A power suit is not really a mech suit. Though as late game tech, some sort of mech suit could replace the battle tanks and it would work, I think.

The armor in the originals were QUITE a product of the time they come out - look at many comic books at the time and you'll see similar outfits. The whole 'covered but not the hair or face' thing was impractical and silly  and would be laughed at today. They may be classic but they still look like they were designed by Rob Liefeld.
