Have you seen the basic armor in the original game? The shoulder pads are massive, but the only real head protection they have is that headband-thing. If anything, the concept art is an homage (but probably not intentional).

So, as it currently stands, we have:
Xenonauts, the game that is basically X-COM, but not named so.
X-COM: Enemy Unknown Remake
XCOM the other shooter thing.

well, also X@COM the rougelike. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=93822.0)

Powerarmor is powerarmor, regardless of small differences in detail. Saying that a particular type of powerarmored marine is completely different from others because the appearance is somewhat different is akin to saying that an M-16 and AK 47 are completely different because they're shaped differently, and one is made largely out of plastic, while the other is steel and hardwood. Yeah, they look different, but they're the same type of thing, with the same purpose.
I'm not really sure what you're talking about here. You're telling me two items with the same purpose are indistinguishable? Or that the differences are meaningless? Is that it?

What's wrong with the way he looks?  Not everything can be completely unique.  When you're going for realism, armor is one of the harder things to take creative license with and not make something that looks stupid.
When you've got technology that's rather new (like power armour would be here), I think it's forgivable to do something interesting with its aesthetics. Take a look at tanks in WW2, for example. Particularly the weird looking ones like the T-100.

Then again, I don't think the guy in the concept art has the most practical combat armour either. Are your shoulders, elbows and knees really more valuable than your head?

My point was that you were apparently ragging on the screenshot because the soldier was in run-of-the-mill powerarmor, yet you decided that a big block of grey metal hammered into slightly different shapes was a significant departure from the standard. I'm all for the small visual differences, but they certainly don't make the game itself any different, especialy when they aren't really any more different from the 'standard' than any of a dozen other powerarmored space marines.

Although we've yet to see what the actual power armour looks like here. Hopefully it won't look all that generic.

And either way, I'm still looking forward to this. The last relatively mainstream tactical turn-based title was Silent Storm (and its derivatives), and that turned out awesome.

I do, however agree with all of this completely.  ;)

I just hope they wont go for a quick buck using a franchise name....

Let say a franchise stop, MCdonald.... 30yrs after the franchise die somebody open up mcdonald and sell only fish and chips.... something would be wrong THATS WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO OUR CLASSICS!!!!

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

jocan, we already have a (not firaxis) company trying to make a buck off X-Com. Most everyone interested has gone for Xenonauts instead, and now this.

Hey, the Shadowrun game actually wasn't that bad. It just would have probably been a lot better if they hadn't tried to make it Shadowrun...

I think they will do a good job because they have already hit the most important features of X-Com.

global strategic map, turn based combat and destructible environments.

Any time I hear about a remake, I look for those things first. If you don't have at least those you have no hope of making a true successor. Highlighting those in the annoucment is a very good sign.

Well, this is good news. Here's hoping they can make a proper remake of it!

What? Where else have you seen power armour like that?
Actually I find that the Brotherhood of Steel T-55 and the X-Com Power Suit are close enough to be two artists' renditions of the same armor (you know, like for a book illustration or some such thing). Not that there's any chance they could be.

is it right that i jizzed my pants for this? yes, it is. this still hurts me. and the news of a PROPER X-COM game has made this year much better.

I wouldn't have hated it so much if they were a bit more honest with their intentions.

If they said from the getgo that it was a Xcom shooter based in the Xcom universe set before the events of the first game that explains the origins of the original xcom.... It would have been more forgivable. (Except even that description I gave is innaccurate)

I have to admit, the body builder space marine is really overdone, and I will miss the gambit style armour. But yeah, here's hoping it's good.

I'm curious if it's going to be isometric with a fixed camera and pixel art like in the original, or if it's going to be rendered in 3d, like Silent Storm.

I'd be down for an X-Com game using an engine like Silent Storm. That game was awesome.
