Just making sure. :P
Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Progression (click to show/hide)
I didn't do too much with the progression except lower random health stats, which is why it probably looks weird. I didn't change difficulty bonuses/penalties either.

Also, it looks like I was wrong. Highest accuracy is 60 on the Elite Snipers ;)

Giving this a replay.  A month or so ago I tried Long War, and it kicked my ass.  Yes, even understanding that I should lose missions (which I love in theory).  I think I had some bad luck but w/e.

I'm trying vanilla classic and it's going pretty well so far.  But two things:

I love that animation glitch where you equip a soldier and their weapon mysteriously rotates into place impossibly.  It makes no sense and is such a simple fix that I assume they left it in for the lulz.  It does make me happy so mission accomplished.

I keep accidentally using pistols with snipers and assaults, since they (practically) shouldn't overwatch with their primaries.  Then I go to fire, and oops, they were in pistol mode.  The indicator for selected weapon is those tiny little light blue edges.  I'm currently on the diner map and I literally can't see the indicators against the tile floor.  I can figure it out by examining the soldier, but I'm sorry, I don't want to carefully examine each soldier's smallish model to determine whether they're using their primary weapon.

Practically, I wish that using overwatch with a sniper would just automatically use their pistol.  There's no downside to that.  Assaults I can kinda understand, though I would appreciate some sort of easily-spotted notification.

Edit: I mean a sniper should automatically use their pistol when they can't use their rifle.

So Scriver you are a sniper girl from a country whose flag I don't recognize and Sentient Bowtie an australian Heavy, both squaddies.

Also first alien base down, no losses, captured a berserker who gravely wounded Zhang because of extreme line of sight dickery. I mean it was at the final room before the commander and only one guy had sight, and missed. I had medkits left, hopefully.

I'd love to have a soldier and hear about his exploits every now and then.

Wow you guys took all the soldiers who aren't dead, in covert op of in the hospital. I guess I have to hire.

I just had the worst and best missions so far. First an UFO landing with mechtoids activating at the worst times and sectoid commanders at the end. I lost a rookie and a MEC. I had to play hide and seek with a mind controlled soldier. It ended with my main guy panicking and shooting the commander in the face.

And right after, abductions. I caught meld quickly then suddenly 3 pods activated at the same time, with mutton barging all over the street I was in... and then suddenly everyone hit their overwatch, next turn and a couple of grenade later the mission was over. Glorious.

Note: I am save scumming a bit because I foolishly go for the cavalry achievement so I reload when my main guy die or is critically wounded. This does not stop me from getting a painted memorial wall.

EDIT: Screw base defense. I mean it. Long and tedious combat with a clown car of mechtoids and stupid commanders hiding a room back. Lost several high ranked soldiers who barely made out of the sick bay. And Adil Tongsletter, our first dead B12 volunteer who bravely took a plasma blast to the face.

Screw base defense.

All right, soldiers, I'm setting up Operation Plasma Innaface.  Volunteers to supply Plasma?

Also Scriver was mind controlled for most of the last turns. Her survival defies common sense.

What's weird is that according to the wiki the mission is supposed to pick soldiers from the top of the ranks but as I checked the memorial after the mission, I am sure it did not see BFEL of King Skies in the death list.

I lost my best assault and support in this debacle. But I guess it could have been worse. :P

On the brighter side, I bought New Guy and got a batch of fresh squaddies.
