My Assault could do up to 5 damage per shot, it's just that she only did 1 or 2 per shot, rapid fire so it was actually 1-2 twice a turn.  The only one consistently seriously damaging the Sectopod was the Sniper, getting a critical worth 8 at one point.
Sectopods and their Hardened attribute halving all damage - not going to like the base assault which is imminent.

Edit coz Ninja'ed: Using plasma on assault and support, laser on sniper, railgun on MEC.

Are you doing damage roulette or something?

Because 1 - 2 damage is quite low even for light plasma

Yes - Damage roulette is wonderful sometimes, but it can be a PITA as well.

Also, again, all damage to sectopods is cut in half. They effectively have 60 HP.

Had an interesting council nation prompt today, from Germany, requesting a Sectopod wreck. Reason? To rebuild and re-purpose it 'reduce' the local panic, for 'defensive purposes, of course.' . According to the prompt after complying and reading the news bar afterwards, they were successful.

This makes me wonder, if they can restore a Sectopod into functioning condition, why are we stuck with crappy S.H.I.V.s?
This was before EW was announced and before I learned SHIVs were apparently good before EW.
Compared to a sectopod, SHIVs are still crap.
And I still say they're overrated. Although that might be because pretty much all of mine get blown up on their first mission.

Also, again, all damage to sectopods is cut in half. They effectively have 60 HP.
...and get healed twice as much.
Because XCOM, baby.

With full upgrades in EW, they're arguably better than MECs.

Also, for EU, ShivCom

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

My favorite part was how he very nearly lost.

That, and the note about how one SHIV on a squad sucks, but a whole squad of them...doesn't.

SHIVs are crap when you have things that deal 8+ damage per hit to it.

SHIVs then proceed to shine when you have psionics that can't scratch it :P

Rift. Or that lancey thing, which I've heard always does max damage to SHIVs because of their 0 Will.

That's only a threat from Ethereals. The important part is that SHIVs are totally unaffected by Mind Control. I can't remember if they can be Mindfrayed or not, but I don't recall it ever happening to me.

I think (don't quote me on this) that SHIVs are immune to any targeted psionics. The only reason Rift works is because it's untargeted.

Not certain whether I'd rather have MECs or SHIVs late-game. SHIVs are very weak to Rift, but immune to MC. MECs can have high will, making Rift less deadly... but they aren't immune to MC. And MECs can't even get the genetics upgrade that blocks MC, meaning they're the only late-game unit vulnerable to Mind Control.  :-\

I've seen multiple reliable sources note SHIVs' vulnerability to Lance. It's targeted.

On the flip side, SHIVs have a (slightly) longer range on their plasma attacks than ethereals do on their psionic ones.

I'm pretty sure Rift and Lance are supposed to be physically damaging psionic abilities. At least I assumed that.

Well, given that they can destroy physical objects, like walls...
