Yeah, that's why I use rockets.

I mean, there's no real risk to it as you can replay the final mission as many times as you like even on II but I don't really enjoy replaying the entire final mission again because my assault reflected his crits back on his own face.

That's why I was surprised yours didn't bounce back.

Another hard-earned lesson learned from Ironman.

Make double sure the game isn't in the middle of autosaving when you decide to quit.

Just got Enemy Within and I've learned a few things.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
1) EXALT operatives are suicidally dedicated to hacking the encoder. Even after I walked my MEC into it and blocked the hack they continued to rush soldiers in there. I promptly roasted them all with a flamethrower.
2) There are a LOT of EXALT operatives in every mission involving them.
3) EXALT operatives are a lot like X-COM: They flip-flop between missing a nine foot tall battlemech right in front of them to being the special forces commandos they're supposed to be. I wiped the floor with all of these guys and more that mission, and the next I lost multiple soldiers.

I once had an EXALT mission on the skyscraper rooftop construction level.  The encoder was on the other side from the spawn it took several turns to get there.  When I arrived the hack was in progress, they had the high ground, and reinforcements were already dropping.

It was at this point my badass covert operative made her way to a relay and hacked it, then moved in range to hack the next relay next turn.  The rest of the squad overran EXALT's positions while the heavies bulletstormed there way to 3 shots every 2 turns.  This continued for four relay hacks, but between the constant reinforcements, the starting distance between us, and the insane total health of the EXALT squad they still survived.  As we pulled back they had multiple troops in high elevation with laser weapons firing down, and critically wounded the MEC in a single volley.  I double rocketed the encoder, killing all but 1 of the EXALT troops but destroying the encoder.  Most of the squad raced the last EXALT guy to the transcriber, while the medic patched up the MEC.  The last guy managed to get a turn of hacking in and wound 2 operatives before we managed to take him down.

So, yeah.  EXALT's effectiveness is all over the place.

A million exalt members are nothing compared to a SHIV.

By the way, I'll never forget how I beat the exalt base attack mission. I crashed in through the roof with three MECs. It felt like an anime lol.

Personally, I love planting some robots on the encoder to watch it constantly. Bonus points if it's mecs with kinetic strike. Fun times.

Probably my favorite exalt mission was an encoder defense mission on that one map with the fountain and bus and everything. It's the one for the council mission w/ Anna Sing.

I positioned most of my soldiers around the bus where the...second encoder thing was. The first encoder was by the statue. When EXALT first got triggered, reinforcements came in too. There ended up being 10 or so EXALT soldiers crowding around the encoder, with no care as to being flanked or coverless. It was hilarious.

I promptly rocketed the site with my two heavies and then played "defended the bus" for the rest of the mission. That bus was a surprisingly good bunker.

I remember the first EXALT mission was the hardest, there was so many of them and they had a lot of health. I had to blow up the encoder when they swarmed it, then had to chase down the survivors when they made a run for it. Run and Gun and rockets were my best friend that mission.

Then the rest of them got easy because I had a support agent get muscle fiber density and mimetic skin. They couldn't even catch up to him let alone shoot him.

Yeah, deciding between punch and Flamethrower is really easy at first, and then gets harder later on.

For instance - Wanted to get the 'Our Powers Combined' achievement, so I've got one lvl3 MEC and another 3 level 2's, in a squad.
Talk about a 'scorched earth policy'.

I have been through two exalt missions so far, both very easy.
My agent for both missions was my genetically modified assault.   The one time they hit her she healed it off.   And she had an upgraded laser pistol, so she could actually kill one of the exalt members in a single turn if she was lucky.  In the first mission I just killed everything on the map, and had her run through the reaction fire to the transmitters, and then run through it again to the evac zone.  The second mission which I just completed I just gunned down all the exalt agents as they ran for the transmitter.  They never even got to fire their guns.

Yeah, my covert operative was an assault soldier as well. He had tactical sense, lightning reflexes, flush (useless), and close combat specialist. He was armed with a laser pistol and could get a couple kills during most fights.

There's a ghost in the shell clip I really wanted to link to for this, but apparently no one has put it on youtube :(

Incidentally, part of me really wanted an upgrade to turn alloy SHIVs into spider tanks, with extra vertical mobility.

Know what I want in the next game? Tactical teleporting.
It'll be so OP on both sides if they don't do it right, though.

You mean like the Floaters' ability, or like the Skeleton Suit ability?
