I just finished the game for my first time on ironman normal. The ending was... horrific. If I had been on classic or impossible I would have lost. I came in with 2 psi snipers, a psi heavy, a psi support (one of my original squad), a normal support, and my Volunteer was one of my original assaults. Got through to the last room without a scratch, immediately was caught offguard while positioning, and was unable to position myself properly. 1 of my psi snipers, my psi heavy, and my normal support were all taken control of. Due to positioning, the sniper had a clear shot on all of my troops, the heavy was right next to my Volunteer, and the normal support was next to my psi support. I had my sniper shoot at the Uber Ethereal twice, and one connected for a crit which knocked it down to 2/5 of its original health, and my Volunteer mopped up the Mutons with a rift, while I had my psi support create a barrier that would (hopefully) stop hits on my soldiers by their comrades. This failed miserably. In the end, I ended up killing the Ethereal controlling my heavy, but the other sniper and my normal support were still controlled. Without any other option, I ended up suiciding my heavy to kill the sniper and the support due to extremely low health on my other units (they would not have lasted through a plasma shot). My assault and support had their shots reflected, almost killing them, and my sniper had his first shot reflected, dropping him to 1 health. I fired a second shot, knowing if this missed I would lose, and it critted the Uber Ethereal. Cue game over, with only 2 units returning home of the 6 sent, and only 1 original squad member in the entire game living to completion. Ouch.

Edit: In retrospect, shoulda brought mind shields.

I encountered what may be the most hilarious bug yet. I added the music after a few minutes, and I'm really sorry for the shoddiness I was recording with my phone.

What.

brought a tear to my eye, very emotional. Although making viewers crank their necks 90 degrees isn't nice :(

I'm very sorry, I had no idea changing the view on my camera would cause that.
I just wanted everyone to be able to see the other Operative looking back at the sniper every few seconds going, "What the heck are you doing?"

They were born long before EW.

That was amazing. Was this Normal, Classic, or Impossible? I wanna say Classic, but I dunno.

This SHIV buff in EW and the MECs are seriously tempting me to pick up EW at full price. These robots, man. These robots. I'm geeking out here.

I played through an entire mission with just 3 MECs and a SHIV. The MECs did nothing but run up and kinetic strike every single enemy. We took no damage and no prisoners.

Pretty sure you can get EW at at least 25% off right now.

Also, to tempt you even more, the MECs actually will continue to speak the language they were speaking before with the same voice they were using before, except like robots this time. It sounds a bit innocuous, but wait till you get your German guy in a MEC.

On Steam Enemy Within is still full price, $30 USD for me. Enemy Unknown is on sale at 75% off, but I already got that last time it was 75% off during the summer sales, so yeah.

I'd think Enemy Within would go on sale during the winter/christmas/holiday steam sales, but I don't know. It's still a fairly recent release. Even if it does go on sale, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a small deal, like 33% off or something.

Your Google Fu is quite awful.

I got mine at 25% off on GMG with a tip someone else posted here.

Ooooooooooooh. To buy or not to buy...? Technically, I never finished Enemy Unknown, but I do think I could do better the second go-around.

This is absolutely great. I think I'm going to use this as one of my "Welcome to X-COM, Motherfucker" videos. Now I just need something that showcases a catastrophic panic spiral.

That fishing village mission. Having played it before, I knew what was up, so, while I sent an entire squad, I sacrificed a Squaddie and a SHIV to accomplish it.

Never forget Goliath-1. 11 missions, 21 kills, godspeed good sir.

Meanwhile, an actual human, Emma Konig (Koenig?), died and not a tear was shed for her.

XCOM fucks with your sense of virtual morality a fair bit.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Oh, thanks for this.  I probably will regret it when I see it for cheaper on steam later this week though.

Does anyone else enjoy playing with the Training Roulette Second Wave option? It does deny you some of the most obvious combinations, and the more useful class-specific abilities if you're unlucky, but...

Well, let's just say that a Gunslinger Support with Close Combat Specialist, Sentinel, and an upgraded Plasma Pistol makes Chryssalid missions very entertaining. Especially if you also have Absolutely Critical enabled.
