I'm just infuriated with this.

The first few missions in II are the hardest, especially the first one, which I've played over and over. I've only had 2 runs get anywhere past the first few missions.

It all has to do with a snowball effect of sorts, if you have anyone die (Or worse, not rankup.) on the first mission, then there is basically no point to continue playing. Without rankups, you fail, almost guaranteed. You are worse off in the second mission, worse in the third, and so on. It just starts to get absurd. Continuing playing with one death on the first mission is pushing luck, 2 dead and there is no point to keep playing.

Most infuriatingly, how you do on the first mission is almost solely based on luck.

I think my most recent failed play through was save number 43. For reference, I have two completed saves, one on normal (#1), and one on classic (#7). (I admit I am reciting the numbers by memory so I may be off by one or so.)

Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

You know what, I've given up on playing II. It just can't, it's too frustrating, too... painful. It's just not fun. I was attempting it out of pride, the final test, in succession from my previous two successful play-through.

Now, I've started a Classic Ironman game with a few second wave options. I am now having something I haven't had in a long time, and that is fun.

That, and after playing II for so long IC is now a cakewalk.

That, and sectoids with 3 health?

MOTHERFUCKING

BEAUTIFUL.

I know but...
Spoiler: LOOK AT THIS (click to show/hide)

Game 1 is Normal. Game 7 and 57 are classic. All between 7 and 57 were Ironman Impossible. :'(

How many hours of my life...

And yet Firaxis ended up underestimating the tenacity of the X-COM fanbase. Personally, I hope Enemy Within has a difficulty above Impossible called Oh God Why, with a description of "There is something seriously wrong with you people".

This interview mentions how Impossible mode is in EW near the middle.

One thing I want just as much as I don't want is for the final mission to be harder. To be a final test, a final challange, not a slightly painful trip down memory lane like it is now. Good news is they acknowledged at some point they realized they failed with the final mission. My guess is they will make the final mission harder in EW.

Yeah, I think I beat impossible ironman a few days after it came out haha.

Edit: Nope. I beat classic ironman a few days after it came out. Achievements say I beat impossible ironman in May this year.

Here was my opinion on the difficulties before playing II.

Easy: Easier than taking a piss.

Normal: Where you play the game for the sake of playing the game. There will be bumps and challenges, but you will succeed in the end.

Classic: Absurdly hard.

Impossible: Masochism.

After playing II

Easy: YOU ARE GOD, YOU ARE INVINCIBLE!

Normal: RECKLESS FUN!

Classic: YOU CAN ACTUALLY MAKE MISTAKES! IT'S NOT VERY HARD! YOU CAN BE RECKLESS!

Impossible: YOU WILL DIE. YOU WILL CRY. STUFF WILL EXPLODE. YOUR SOLDIERS WILL MISS. THE ALIENS WILL NOT. HALF COVER IS DEATH. FULL MIGHT NOT BE. HUNKER DOWN TO LIVE. YOUR MEMORIAL SHALL BE LONGER THAN SOME HOLY SCRIPTURES.

And some people can do Ironman Impossible without losing a soldier

http://steamcommunity.com/app/200510/discussions/0/846955554684004270/

That is with some nice 2nd wave options and I think slingshot DLC, as well as just abusing alien mechanics.

Nice piece of advice which I didn't think about though is equipping everyone with medkits in council missions to be immune to thinman poison, makes a lot of sense. Of course just getting to first council mission in Ironman Impossible can be a hard task.

Today I learned floaters can be poisoned.

Had a group of them fly through a cloud left by a thinman.

Everyone of them was poisoned.

Most enemies can be poisoned, but once Thin Men vanish there isn't much opportunity for it.

This makes me wonder if Chryssalids can be poisoned.

Welp.

3rd month.

A terror mission.

3 Cyberdiscs

I should mention this is actually the first time I've seen the Ivory Disc in this play-through.

Only lost two people, and almost lost one of my best soldiers.

but still.

THREE.

I have yet to complete XCOM.   :-[

Stupid me for starting on Ironman.  I got too attached to my soldiers (three of my original four are still alive and kicking backside), and now I don't want to play that game any more because I just KNOW they're going to die.  Poor bastards.

So I've started a new game with EXPENDABLE CANNON FODDER troops that I don't care about!  On non-Ironman.  I'm a coward.  :P  Time to race through the game now, right?  Right?
