Huh, I thought they said that you would be able to research the ability to carry more soldier into battle, and I saw people earlier in the thread saying how we already have helicopters and stuff that can carry more than 4 people easily.

I don't know if we currently have anything like a jet version of the Osprey at the moment though. You have to consider the craft has to be able to get from base to the mission area as quickly as possible (even on the other side of the country/planet), and when it arrives, it needs to be able to land in any terrain (X-Com doesn't use fast ropes) including the middle of a street of a crowded city or in rough, uneven rocky terrain. So, maybe the research improves the passenger compartment by making the engine of the craft or the electronics smaller which allows for more seats to be placed in the craft, because a smaller craft can land in those kinds of places easier, and carrying less weight means it can move faster to the objective...

Maybe it's a sort of escalation thing as well. Early UFOs tend to be small scouts, so sending in four trained guys wouldn't be -too- much of a stretch. As UFOs get larger and more aliens are involved in each mission you'll hopefully have invested research into better landing crafts which hold more troops.

It's gonna be a few years ahead though, they could make a sort of skyranger thingy and that's all. Or you could be able to send a few of them at once. Still won't make any sense going headlong with four guys into a threat that you know nothing about (aka the first mission). Your squad should be big enough that losses would be acceptable, while being a 4-man squad it will mean that losing one guy means that your squad is obsolete for that mission and you should retreat.

Am I really the only one who thinks rumors about "upgrade the squad for more soldiers" means "hiring people"?  Surely I'm not.

They wouldn't even mention the upgrading. OR GI is stupid. Both seem to make sense.

I can just see that:
Head of Sciences: Sir?
Director of XCom: Yes?
HS: After weeks of careful study, we have found a way to solve the personel problem.
DX: Have you figured out the secret of alien cloning?
HS: Not quite yet.
DX: Can we permanently barinwash them?
HS: I don't think that's possible.
DX: What then?
HS: We have discovered temp agencies!
DX: Temporal agents? Brilliant!
HS: No sir. Temp agencies. We hire loads of people without skills or insurance there.
DX: Why?
HS: So that we could send wave after wave of them at the aliens until they run out of men.
DX: That sounds just crazy enough to work. How much money do you need to manufacture one?
HS: They already... hm... about 35 thousand dollars per recruit should be suffcicent.
DX: Here's a cheque for 0.7 Million , get right on it.
HS: Will do, sir!

I'm picturing some goofy thing along their tech tree like "Fiberoptic interspace transmitters" means you can have 5 active squaddies instead of 4. Like the zerg and conqueror strategy is being carefully controlled for.

Agent Hilrado Cortez

Str 8
Agi 3
Dex 10
Int 14

Indirect Fire Specialist

Special Ability: Body Contortionist

Being able to contort one's body into a small space has its advantages. In this case, it means you can fit this soldier and their equipment into the overhead glove-compartment without the need to fully install additional seating in your transports. This soldier does not count towards the maximum capacity of the transport ship. Ability cannot take place if the soldier is wearing an exoskeleton. "I knew hiring performers from the local circus was a good idea!"
Fantastic.

So, in theory, if you only hire people form the circus, you can have unlimited people in a limited space, Dwarf Fortress style?

If we were to hire people from the circus I want to put a pack of contortionist elephants in the transport and teach the aliens the meaning of boatmurdered.

The RPS article mainly rehashes stuff from the gameinformer site, although they say they should have their own interview with Firaxis sometime during the week. Looking forward to that one.

Also, new article up at Gameinformer. This time, XCOM music!
