I don't think in this game Rookies are considered elite soldiers

Too bad they outright state it in the tutorial mission.

It does mean that the soldier rewards are more then just another soldier. It would essentially be one of their "best" soldiers.

I wouldn't consider "Elite" soldiers to be rookies with only the most basic of training... I mean, unless you have the school upgrade, when you first get your rookies, they don't even have enough experience to know what weapon they work best with. *cough* and apparently 3/4 of them don't know, and can never figure out how smoke grenades work.

Original game had this problem too though. You rookies were supposed to be pulled from a pool of the best of the best. Despite that, occasionally you'd get a complete coward who would panic and start shooting your squad at he slightest provocation and also occasionally you'd get someone who was so physically weak they couldn't carry a rifle, a clip, and a grenade at the same time without feeling weighted down.

No, things don't make sense, but if you have the right mindset to ignore inconsistencies and silly plot. It's still a fun game, which is what should matter.

You dont need to capture them. If you want to you can get a Foundry upgrade to capture them but only for the remainder of the mission not for interrogation or anything.

I dunno why they had it so they cant be captured.

Aren't they robots?
Also, South America seems the way to go. Get arc throwers as soon as possible, with as many labs and scientists as you can afford. Should have decent armor and laser gun by the first terror mission.

Huh, I checked the wiki and it indeed says they can't be captured.

But then why the hell did the commander say I need to capture those two?! :(

Also, does difficulty changing work correctly? I played on Normal, got bored, switched to Classic and noticed no difference at all. All the missions are a breeze. What's the difference between difficulties, anyway?

I've always viewed the soldiers in X-Com as this: Nations promised X-Com the best of their best, and quietly inducted the drags of their military - weaklings, cowards, problem-cases - into their special forces just long enough to throw them at X-Com. X-Com shakes out the worst and the rest have to get better or die.

I think you may be mistaken. I never got a mission to capture anything like that.

He's not really interested in a "live" repair bot.

All he wants is the remains you pretty much always get.

Or maybe it ruined the balance, or proved bad for gameplay.

Ai soldiers can screw up your tactics, and might misinform the player that he thinks he can rely on them. Which he can't.

Eh, the player could easily ignore the tactics once they realise the soldiers suck. This is X-COM after all, the game kinda expects you to get fucked over upon your first encounter with enemies (such as the arty strike attack one enemy has. Holy fuck, didn't expect to get hit by that, the guy it hit had around 20 health, it knocked him out, put him in critical condition and killed him. In one attack. Shit.)

my champion is now holding his artifact crossbow by his upper left leg and still shooting with is just fine despite having no hands.
What? He's firing from the hip.

Haven't experienced arty strike yet but I know its there from autopsy, Didnt expect it to do 20 damage, but Sectopods are just evil things which need to be killed ASAP.

Haha, yeah, that. My first encounter with one involved a mind controlled floater going up ahead. The first turn, that silly enemy does nothing. I was wondering what was up with that; but I wasn't going to question a good thing. Next turn, arty strike on my squad, way out of LOS range; injuring about 4 of em quite badly. >_<

Just finished my first classic ironman. Started from south america, without tutorial, which proved to be extremely useful, as the immediate research boosts from the initial captures and autopsies meant I had carapace armour and laser rifles by the first terror mission.

Hm, I built a hyperdimensional relay or whatever (after the alien base mission). Now the objective is 'begin scanning'. How do I do it?

I believe that you just hit the scan button as per usual.

I'm thinking the SA bonus kinda sucks, because interrogations and autopsies have the shortest research times... like, what, 2 days each? And you run out of them quite fast. Seriously there's like 4 enemies to capture at first, then 2-3 more mid game, and a couple more end-game? And sat covers eventually can give you all the other bonuses anyway.

Yeah, SA bonus sucks. I started my second game on SA, horrible decision. It's ok mid game, after you've got satellites in all the major ones. Interrogations are really powerful in this game, but they don't take too long either. It saves you maybe 2 weeks of research in total. But usually research speed is not really the bottleneck.. it's trying to get enough alloys and money and stuff to start research and manufacture things. Though idk on higher difficulties.

Most of the time you're just better off taking something with a financial advantage, and just put in those 2-3 days of interrogations when you want to research something.
