But don't get too overhyped. This creates overexpectation sads. crazyness.
Fits here more than the Castle Story thread.
New strategy x-com is awesome and is from a strategy dev at that, but at least wait until we have something more concrete than a goddamn alpha/beta press demo to complain about. Pre-release games change somewhere between a tiny bit and a metric ton, just look at A Valley Without Wind. Thats changed its perspective, health system, mana system and UI (somewhat), and it hasn't even gotten past v0.6 yet.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

This might be going back a bit, but it's relevant.  It came up when writing the X-COM wargame.

Why are these elite soldiers acting like fucking babies?

I wanted X-COM to be an elite force, but I wanted to capture that "why is everyone dying oh god oh man" feeling you get the first time you play, and I also wanted there to be room for advancement when it comes to the campaign.

My solution:  Yeah, they're elite soldiers with years of experience but that all goes out the window when a little gray weirdo blows a basketball sized hole in your friend's chest and black grinning crab monsters are bursting fully formed out of civilians.  I gave agents very variable skill levels to represent the very unpredictable way they'd react.  One guy might take it in stride, the next might flip the fuck out.

That's my reconciliation of the "elite secret agency" and "10 bravery give me a blaster let's fuckin' do this" aspects of the game

So, everyone's being getting worked up about a goddamn press demo. Probably not even near finished, unless they've had this hidden for a year or two.
Of course! Anything that differs in any way from the game released 20 or so years ago will have at least one person screaming "RUINED FOREVAR!!!!!!!!11!!"

No one screamed ruined forever. I'm just upset when they changed things I thought a sane man would not change, and which makes me doubt if that will be a faithful re-"imagining". It's a re"imagining" of a game that I play 10 years now. I'm just annoyed by the devs, who said "It's awesome, your guys get out of the skyranger and get shot immediately! Very good challenge. Now, let's take this shit out."

But they didn't!  No one ever fucking said that!  You are taking a single bit of information, "four guys," and extrapolating all kinds of stuff out of it.  No one ever said it's not going to be lethal.

They particularly said permadeath is in already. So I'm not sure what Domenique is even rambling about now.

This thread could actually be pretty useful to help teach developers just how much their potential customers will obsess over the smallest detail and attempt to twist every single word that comes out of their mouths.

I think this could teach a whole semesters worth of college social psychology.

I think they know already, it's not like this is the first or last game that will happen to.

I've been lurking and reading the thread, and my general viewpoint is this:

Cool, Firaxis is developing the game. They have a good trackrecord of making games I like. Now, until they actually release a demo or the full game, let's sit back and wait to see what they can do. You can always form the torch and pitchfork mob after its released and mob the gates.

I just spend half an hour typing up a big post regarding ... everything and nothing, really. But I gave up. It'll only add more fuel to this discussion. A discussion that will eventually lead to the Great Toad coming in and cleansing it. I do not wish to provoke that kind of response, even if only indirectly.

We'll see how this game turns out. Que sera, sera.

I don't understand the need to hate something that doesn't exist just because it can't possibly be what you (general you) want. New XCom won't make old XCom cease to be. If you truly won't be satisfied with anything less than the original, play the original and be content. I'm just glad someone's making a real attempt, and have no problems waiting to play the game before I decide what I think of it.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

•Likewise, you'll never get plasma-bombed right out of the carrier. (See above. Just because the developers didn't use smoke grenades doesn't mean they should change one of the most TENSE moments of the game. Surviving the disembarkment was FUN!)

This was what I was talking about. It refers to the challenge, the developers talked in their video how they will try to recreate the challenge of the previous game and bam comes this (they specifically mentioned getting out of skyranger and being shot from everywhere). I don't understand why they scratch the parts that were good and they themselves liked. I do look overreacting, I'm sorry.

This shouldn't need to be stated again (or at all!), but a forum post is not a valid source.

People, people - the criticism and worry is NOT unjustified. The first several pages of this thread were NOTHING but hopeful and optimistic, after all. Xenonauts is changing quite a few things, and I've heard nothing but positive things about that game. If there's any problems here, its that the developers are being closed mouth and not justifying the (seemingly) poor decisions we are, admittedly, hearing about second hand. Would it kill them to put out a few details so we had something REAL to discuss instead of rumours? To declare their intent in these various areas?

Not that, in my mind, they've done anything in particular badly (yet), confirmed. But people have always had the worry it was going to be dumbed down, and the few bits of info we HAVE gotten from them seem to indicate that is more likely than when we started.
