I can't tell if I'm at the tipping point of disaster or just over the edge.
You'll be okay, from what you've said you're still at a salvageable position. You should always always attempt to equip your soldiers in your best gear, even if it means selling things. I sell down to ~10 corpses of each type and I sell any equipment which the game says has no research value. (ie, alien surgery, alien entertainment, damaged craft components)

Honestly the 50% research credit intentionally makes research reasonable.
And it gives a very good incentive to capture more critters. Each one I've captured has given research credit for something different. Snakemen gave me 50% credit towards all UFO research.

I've had the UI become absolutely horrible at times. For example sometimes the game ABSOLUTELY does not want me placing a unit on a perfectly logical spot.

You pretty much HAVE to if you don't want to wait forever. It turns from "Incentive"/Bonus to absolutely nessisary to win the game.

I am so paranoid with alien bodies... Some don't even have a current use even after researching them. Yet I havn't sold one.

Remember, you aren't selling those bodies - you're investing them into the ability to acquire more in the future!

I've been selling quite a bit of stuff, actually. I'm only keeping 4 bodies of anything at the moment. This campaign has been seriously strapped for cash. Which wasn't helped by me accidentally excavating an area just by clicking.

I need more of those missions that give me a money reward. I have more scientists and engineers than I need, thanks, can I just have money now?

had my first encounter with a muton berserker. almost became my last.

that thing is ridiculously powerful, and even with plasma/lasers, i didnt do enough damage to end it quick.

lost my best assault to the berserker, and my best heavy (in titan armor, no less) got stuck out of cover. got critted once, stabilized by my medic, then shot and killed right after he was revived.
my sniper also got critted, but was revived and lived. almost lost one of my best supports to that guy as well, as she was just left with 2 hp and 3 mutons to go through.

so yeah, for those of you who havent seen it yet. watch out. if you see a muton in red armor, panic.

Incidentally, the heavy upgrade 'bullet swarm' or whatever its called is amazing. It doesn't end your turn after firing the primary weapon.

Why is that amazing? It lets you fire twice.

Give him a SCOPE? (How a scope helps with a machinegun is beyond me)

Neo, are you still playing on Normal?  I don't ask to discount your advice, but just want to keep it in perspective.  In Classic, I am so cash-strapped that I only keep one corpse on hand generally and even sold off all my Sectoids since they seem to be fully researched.

Remember, you aren't selling those bodies - you're investing them into the ability to acquire more in the future!

Exactly!  Same thing with grenades - yeah, I'm trashing valuable stuff, but unless its UFO equipment that stuff still amounts to less than the cost of replacing a rookie, and certainly less than a non-rookie.

Keep the epic stories coming! I have to live through you guys until next week. And I've already had three straight nights of XCOM related dreams (though one was an XCOM/ARMA 2 DayZ combo, and was awesome)

Well, I don't know that it's epic, but you can read about the downfall of Grey Squad here.

Wait, Bulletstorm lets you fire TWICE? WHAT THE HECK! I always assumed it would only let you know after you had fired. Jeez. Never saw that picked!

Good god. Playing on Classic Ironman and just had a full squad wipe on a bomb defusing mission. Mission started fine but slowly went down hill as wave upon wave of Thinmen were introduced. For some reason they give me more trouble then Mutons, floaters and Beserkers combined.

By the time I got to the bomb I had three squad members left. My heavy has one health left, my Sniper (Who is a Captain level reward from the last mission) is perched on top of a mausoleum on overwatch, and my Assault, Talon-3, who just reached the bomb. As soon as I deactivate it TEN god damn Thinmen drop out of the sky. One is taken out by my Sniper's Overwatch and two more drop on my turn but my heavy goes down to a plasma burst at point blank range. Talon-3, god bless him, gets surrounded as well but manages to take down three before he falls to a combination of poison and plasma.

My sniper is left alone with four Thinmen with no LOS on any of them. I spend 3 turns on overwatch hoping that one of them pops their head out but with no cover on the top of the mausoleum and the Thinman's ability to leap I was just waiting to get flanked. I have him drop down and move to cover which immediately triggers reaction fire from a Thinman. I'm given a small mercy as the reaction fire misses and my sniper gets to cover safely. Since he has team-sight instead of (That one ability to move and shoot a Sniper rifle) my only offensive options are a laser pistol. While it does hits, it only does a measly one point in damage and I consign myself to defeat. By some grace of god the origional Thinman misses and my Sniper takes him out on my activation. There's still hope! My Sniper is way too far to make it to the extraction point but with the proper high-ground I could still pull this off.

Then the remaining three Thinmen flanked my Sniper's position and murder him to death.

I love/hate this game.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.
