Spoiler: cheat names (click to show/hide)
"Cheat names"?

Also, the game is cheating, it decided to bug out when I was winning a mission. Too bad I have a save right before I started it.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

OTTO ZANDER IS A CHEAT NAME?!

Welp, gotta go confirm that.  Because, holy fuck.

I have to say, this game has given me a new appreciation for Iron Man playthroughs.

The only missions I feel I do better then most people are Escort missions. I have never lost one or even had trouble.

Though I can see why. Most missions the key to success is to huddle close, move as slow as possible, and be very careful.

Yet VIP missions are the exact opposite. The key is to create a chain so you can shoot spawning aliens no matter where they spawn, to leave men behind, and to move the VIP as quickly as possible.

Also WOW are the Robots MUUUUCH better then I thought they would be. I mean they were great in the original but got outdated by your own troops... but my Alloy Shiv... YIKES!

There is no reason NOT to have one that I can find other then preference. Even max leveled, great equipment, soldiers don't outdate a good Shiv anymore.

At least I assume so.

Really? I'd been avoiding the SHIVs - built the foundry late (due to lack of money), and assumed I was behind in tech, and that they'd be useless.

Might be nice to have some expendable-yet-competent soldiers... if I ever get enough money to research/build them, that is.

Well to put it in perspective

Yikes. Might not beat a Captain soldier in Titan armour, but they're probably better than a mid-rank soldier. A lot better than bringing rookies on yet another difficult abduction while my vets are healing!

Experimental warfare has always been something I've put off.  I'm sure it leads to useful stuff, but between the interrogating aliens path and the improving my soldier's gear path, its seemed like I don't want to split my attention to another area.  This game, for example, I've got together laser rifles and carapace armor, but I don't even have experimental biology yet or the South America bonus, so I'll have to get that.  And half my troops are snipers, so then I'll need to get skeleton armor, and that's another month of research, and then I'll have to do interrogations...

Sounds like I might be missing something useful though.  Just for arguments sake, isn't it good to bring rookies to fights?  Sure they suck, and they panic at the first sign of trouble, but having a big set of squaddies gives you more freedom in organizing your squad, and a chance to recover if your skilled soldiers get taken out.  Plus, new soldiers are cheap.

Okay, the game is definitely cheating now.

How? Floaters are flying through the roof/wall of a UFO. An INTACT roof or wall. Not using their special ability, just plain flying.

I have had enemies randomly appear next to my guys on Landed UFO missions -.- luckily every time its happened my soldiers were on overwatch. This has happened about four times now, and its not floaters, it's mutons and thin-men.

Honestly, I rarely have rookies panic at the first sign of trouble. That's because the 'first sign of trouble' is usually the rookie keeling over dead.  :P

It gets better once you have a surplus of armour. A spare Skeleton Suit, maybe a SCOPE to offset their terrible aim, plus a decent weapon, means your new squaddie might survive his first mission and get a promotion. Until then, though, a rookie is basically a one-use bullet catcher.

(There's also an Officer Training School upgrade that converts all new rookies into squaddies. Haven't had the money to purchase it yet, though. I'm very tempted to send a few rookies out on the streets, begging for spare change...)

The free recruit I got at the start of the game? The one that got 44 kills and is now a colonel? Now a psyker, no stat loss whatsoever.

In hindsight he might just be surviving because I'm throwing all the good stuff on him. Titan armor, carapace armor, laser guns, his own personal medic...

Do you guys ever meet aliens inside the UFOs?  I've had sectoids defend the doors, and outsiders the control rooms, but I've never had a normal fight where everyone was inside the UFO, which is a pity, because even the smaller ones I've attacked look like awesome places to battle.

The rookies actually get the best weapons for me, because I don't want to research the extra laser weapons (figure I'll just jump on over to plasma) and the vast majority of my team can't use assault rifles.  I have one assault, one support, a bunch of snipers, and a few heavies.  So really, rookies are a valuable asset.

I really want that squaddie upgrade, but my army is more a large number of medium troops than a few elites, which means I unlock OTS upgrades slower.  On the bright side, we can soak up casualties pretty well, minus the lopsided classes.
