There is a skill for support soldiers which lets them reaction fire when aliens attack as well as move.

!!!

I love Supports now.

Smoke Grenade is your new Best Friend.

Smoke Grenade lets you go where you want without fear.
Smoke Grenade lets you go toe-to-toe in a firefight and come out on top reliably.
Smoke Grenade lets you have that one guy with the expensive fully-upgraded armor live when he gets shot.

Smoke Grenade is the first Support skill.

Fast Edit: This update accompanies my first mission with no casualties. My (smoke-grenade-covered) sniper was saved from bleeding out by the end of the mission.

Well for one thing, a trained support soldier can use a medkit 3 times in a mission instead of 1.

Wellllll I lost all of my soldiers twice so I'm going to start a game away from the Tutorial to avoid getting railroaded on shit like my research.

Fuck your tutorial. I don't WANT to capture aliens alive yet, I want some goddamn body armor.

Ehhh seems silly that you can't swap out items with a fallen soldier. Serves me right for putting the medkit on one guy.

I'm a little annoyed because I just lost half my experienced soldiers do to a weird quirk were you cannot retreat from attacks on landed UFOs.  My first non-rookie deaths happened because right when I decided to make an organized retreat before stuff got bad, I realized that there was no skyranger to retreat to.  Sort of makes sense in hindsight, since UFOs are faster than the skyranger and could chase it down, but a little warning would have been nice.

Don't get me wrong though, this game is awesome.  I'm playing on classic ironman, and the difficulty is perfect.  You can't win all your fights, but the battles feel fair and the overall war could go either way.  Or at least, feels like it could.

Hilariously, I also failed the first VIP escort mission, but for a different reason.  There was one sectoid in between the squad and the skyranger, and I didn't want to worry about advancing through bad cover with that thing around and a three health VIP in tow.  So I had our crazy lethal female heavy, "Flash", blow it away with a rocket.  She gets the 10% scatter chance and shoots a crate directly in front of her, bringing her and the squad medic down to one health and blowing the VIP sky high.  It was the first mission we had any casualties on, or failed.  And the only casualty was a rookie.

After that, xcom hit hard times.  Most of the experienced soldiers are dead, and we entered the first terror mission with Flash leading three rookies.  That was a complete loss, but we took some aliens with us.  Which is to say, we killed all the floaters without meeting any of the Cryssalids, and then had our first encounter in an enclused three story building.  One badly wounded rookie nobly sacrificed himself by running up to a Cryssalid that was right next to a civilian, saving the civvy and filling the alien with lead at point blank.  Then Flash killed both of them with a rocket.

Now, only the squad medic and a granted-as-reward assault sergeant remain.  We have some cash reserves, so I intend to repeatedly send each of them into battle with three rookies until we either have a sizable force of squaddies or every last man is dead.  Thankfully, the two sergeants will be assisted in his mission by the most advanced accomplishment of our scientists: a single suit of carapace armor, way before we really should have researched that.  With luck, we may eventually gain enough alloys to produce a second suit of carapace armor, and from there we can surely save the world.

Important lesson #4 from my plays: Never do in one move what you can do in two. There IS NO "OH HEY WE SPOTTED AN ALIEN LET'S STOP" and your guys WILL run right up to a Sectoid and then proceed to die because they ran PAST it before their turn ended.

Well, it's pretty much over.  The plan to train up rookies seemed to be going well at first.  We slaughtered three squads of floaters, and worked our way across a boulevard.  Then, standing at the top of the cobbled square, like two horrible statues: mutons, the first we'd ever encountered.  The rookies, amazingly, kept things together and took out the first muton with no casualties, using grenades to take out its cover and then gunning it down the old fashioned way.  The second did much better, killing two rookies.  The two surviving squad members decided to take their chances with the full cover they had and fight things out; the end result was the muton using the first alien grenade we'd ever seen to blow up all our cover and severely wound both members.  So, with no cover, we bum rushed the muton, bringing it down to four health.  Its return fire, amazingly, didn't kill anyone, so we charged into point blank range.  The squad leader had to reload; the rookie missed with a 92% hit rate.  It killed the rookie, our leader shot with his 100% hit rate and 60% to crit... for 3 damage, and then died in return fire.

Well, it was good knowing you shady board of directors.  But looks like you're going to have to fight this one on your own.

I love reading about all of this slaughter. I have some meetings this morning but then I will be knee deep in entrails(hopefully alien) for the rest of the day.

A promoted unit, a satellite, a few Alien Artifacts, some forced research, some Council of Nations approval, a few nearly-free mission bounties, etc.

Basically, it's winning some missions and getting about half your starting money for free in stuff.

Oh, it also forces you to start in Europe and North America and gives you Unrealistic Expectations of being able to hit from 4 tiles away and directly behind something.
