DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I really should have preloaded...

Haha, oh right, RIT internet. It's peaking at around 20 megabytes/s; or 160 megabits/s. :P
70% downloaded now. As it turns out, Steam will actually cripple your computer when downloading at such rates; it eats all teh RAMs. Even those used by Touhou 11, making it freeze.

RIT internet: only $<very large sum students try not to think about> a month!

I would like to see a 4vs4 with 4 players each runt as a community game  :P

I just came by to drop some hate on all you Americans :)

I know you're all in gaming bliss or sleeping at the moment, but do come back and say a few lines about your impressions for the rest of us.

I would but I'm still downloading the preload.

Still 1-2 hours on it. I could have sworn that it said 2.5 hours... 2 hours ago. What the heck.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Taking a quick break from Classic Ironman to bring you this special announcement:
If you thought this game would be "lol casual crowd failgame", I suggest you reconsider.

The Situation: Rescue a VIP and escort him back to the Skyranger.
The Scene: Open street dividing two sidewalks.
The Squad: One of each; Heavy, Assault, Support, and Sniper. The sniper was a full sergeant, heavy and assault were corporals, the support a newly-minted squaddie.

The Story: Mission started easily enough. Had a few minor scares (thin men jumping out where they could flank me), but nothing I couldn't handle. The assault started making his way towards the VIP while the rest provided covering and overwatch fire on the aliens on the other side of the street.
Then the squaddie died. Took a crit from a sectoid plasma pistol behind half-cover and died instantly. A shame, but I could deal with that. He wasn't performing all that well anyway. Nobody panicked, and the fighting continued.
Assault rescued the VIP. Cue thin men jumping out nearby and going into overwatch. Well, fine. The assault drew the enemy fire and managed to avoid any damage, allowing the VIP to follow along.
Anyway, things were going well until the squad, VIP in tow, were just a little bit away from the extraction zone. I expected pursuit, so I set my heavy into overwatch and had my sniper reload.
Two thin men jumped in out of nowhere. One flanking my heavy, who managed to miss from two squares away. One flanking my assault. And then a third (which had been chasing the VIP down the street) jumped up and began suppressing my assault.
The heavy took down his thin man with a second point-blank shot (which had 96% accuracy, mind). The sniper fired a shot at the second thin man at 87% accuracy...and missed. VIP tried to make a run for it and got shot on overwatch (stupid mistake, I was trying to finish the mission before any more of my guys got killed). Heavy, on his last shot before reloading, scored a nice hit at 65% odds on the flanking thin man, killing it. Sniper threw a grenade at the suppressing thin man...which did no damage at all. Assault did a Run n Gun on the final thin man, killing it while barely avoiding death himself.

Mission Failure. And this was maybe the fifth mission.

ETA: Oh, and Mexico is already at maximum panic and is on the verge of leaving the Council. Fun times.

So my first mission on Classic difficulty went well. 4 rookies vs 6 sectoids. One rookie survives.

Floaters are no longer the slightly-goofy-worse-than-sectoids enemy. They are now assholes thanks to their ability to flank out of nowhere and near-perfect evasion in midair. I lost an entire five-man squad consisting of my best soldiers thanks to them and the RNG suddenly hating me. They were critting all over the place and it took a 90% rocket shot to kill one of them.

Playing Classic Ironman.
Spoiler: My dead thus far (click to show/hide)
Damn that Operation Broken Savior. That's where everything went to hell. A rescue on a bridge; the end of which was a low-elevation killing ground, with 2 sectoids perched on the far side. On the way in, everyone was fine up to the npc, then the medic got put in critical condition (and noone else has a medpack). So he's effectively died. Running back, a couple thin men took out my heavy, and nearly wiped the group. So 2 left. We escort the dude to the extraction point, but there is still a mission objective to finish off the 2 sectoids on the far side of the map, so I figure what the hell; I've got 2 corporals left, a sniper and a support. Due to a weird bug, my support decides rather than take cover up top on the bridge, she will run down into the killing zone, entirely out of cover. Yeah; that doesn't last long. So, my sniper barely manages to take out the sectoids, completing the mission.

Next up, Operation Crystal Hero. A simple clearing of 4 sectoids. Except they all happen to be in pretty much the same place. Right next to the starting point. By turn 2, a rookie is dead, and the sergeant (a reward from Operation Broken Savior), is wounded. By turn 3, the sergeant is bleeding out. By turn 4, 1 sectoid is dead, and 1 more rookie is dead. Leaving my surviving sniper (the lone survivor from Broken Savior) to deal with the mess. Due to being really goddamn lucky with the RNG, 2 sectoids go down easily, with the final one in a tense duel, ending with a successful 48% success chance headshot.

So now I have a sergeant (the reward from that mission) and my sniper (also a sergeant now) as my only non-rookies left. Bluh. >_<

1 casualty rookie in the first mission I did. DO NOT trust halfcover for non-rookies because it is not adequate when you need it most.

Edit: 1 casualty Assault Sgt. in the second mission. Full cover isn't always so hot either and overwatch does nothing against someone firing out of cover or moving into that cover from out of sight.
