Currently butchering an animal makes it instantly, perfectly fall apart into all of its components (skin, brain, bones, etc). Why not allow parts of an animal to be butchered? You could kill a badger (elf?) and take its head as a trophy before carving up the body. You could take a !!kitten!! corpse and gut it for wire, leaving the rest of the body intact. You could "butcher" the beard off a sleeping dwarf. The possibilities seem pretty.. well, not endless, maybe, but it could open up a *lead barrel* of opportunity.

Come to think of it, butchery shouldn't be perfect, either. Some yuppie from the city shouldn't be able to make a bear explode into perfectly cut pieces with a sharp rock. He should at least fracture some of the bones until he figured out what he was doing.

You wouldn't rush Goya or Faulkner or Tarantino. Think about Toady as equal to those artists. And then deal with it.

That was the focus of these threads:

It came up in the List thread:

Are we going to see societies that use amputation as punishment? It'd be funny to add "Getting a hand chopped off" to punish_severe for things like stealing. You could also have surgeons acting as torturers in societies where that sort of thing wasn't looked down upon. I can see a goblin putting out an elf's eye in order to convince him to give up the location of the druid's hideout, or hobbling dwarf prisoners to keep them from running away.

He he he, yeah, it's a very reasonable thing.  The more the better really.  Right now they just torture people to death or abuse their corpses lots of ways in world gen, and that should become visible and be extended to the not-killing-them realm.

And the NFotF thread:

Will there be a way to actually view corpse wounds?  Will corpses be able to receive more wounds?

Hrm, I don't really know.  Maybe not, as item viewing has often gotten the short end of the stick, though the appearance paragraph generator could very well be applied direcly to the corpse items, and they have all the info, so maybe it will go in.  Right now, corpses don't receive additional abuse, but given that Armok 1 had that whole corpse processing thing well underway, there will eventually be lots of things in this direction.  Adventure mode could very well become creepy, and the adv skills arc is probably when we'll be going there.

Come to think of it, butchery shouldn't be perfect, either. Some yuppie from the city shouldn't be able to make a bear explode into perfectly cut pieces with a sharp rock. He should at least fracture some of the bones until he figured out what he was doing.

That gets mentioned in basically all of the skill revamp threads, e.g.:
