Hunters and the military, or What am I doing wrong this time?
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:54:41 pm »

So, I haven't touched marksdwarves in a while and while I know how to get them trained up in the use of their crossbows (i've no problems getting them properly equipped or with them using archery ranges, thankfully), I decided this time that in addition to setting up a squad of snipers to take out that Armok-be-damned giant eagle I'd use them as hunters to supplement my tanned hide food stocks.

I could swear that I read a thread in here recently about how if you put the dwarves in the military, equipped them with their crossbows and then assigned them to be hunters that you would not get the odd equipment mismatch errors, but would instead have marksdwarves that performed hunting during their off duty time.

My google-fu is weak so I couldn't find that thread again this evening when i tried it and got a (mostly) unexpected result.

So, I assigned my guys to teh military, originally with their hunting skill enabled.  Since their squad was not active most of them immediately acquired arms, bolts and headed out to try and kill my local yak population (yay!).  A few gave the (Soldier cannot follow orders) error, which I figured was the uniform mismatch bug.  I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be problems so, as I mention above, I stripped them of their hunter assignments and waited for them to pick up quiver and crossbow; they all did in a relatively short amount of time.

Once I had verified they all had crossbows and quivers I reenabled their hunting skills (they were still off duty) and, much to my dismay, they each immediately ran to the weapon stockpile and dropped off their crossbow and bolts, then to the main stockpile to drop off their quivers, and are currently idling in the meeting hall (the lazy bastards!).

So, what did I get wrong?  Did I misremember/misunderstand what I had read, or was it something I either did or failed to do that caused this?

How much equipment do you have?  Miners need 2 picks, one for "military" duty and one for "civilian" mining, even though they're likely to carry the one pick and leave the other alone.

Eight hoary marmot bone crossbows and one (steel crossbow) for my nine marksdwarves.

From what you post, I'm assuming this means I need at least nine more crossbows to make this work.  Well, could be worse, I guess. ;)

Hunters are usually the first ones caught out in a siege or ambush anyway; it's better to just breed meat and keep your marksdwarfs in training. However, if you want hunters/marksdwarfs I think the simplest way is to turn off hunting and assign kill orders for individual dwarfs. Some butcher or hauler will take in the corpse (depending on outside-refuse-hauling enabled), far less valuable dwarfs to be caught outside.

Turn on their hunting, and wait for them to grab the crossbow. Now assign them that specific crossbow in the equipment screen, you now have a Dwarf that uses the same crossbow for hunting and military. So you're basically doing the right thing in the wrong order. Works for wc/battle axes and mnng/picks as well

Ah HAH!  Thank you Loud Whispers! :D  I just knew I was getting some part of it wrong.  My entire week has been like that, unfortunately.

Is this info already in the wiki (and I failed to find it)?

Not quite sure :|

I'm not sure if this bug is on the wiki either, so I don't know much about that :d

Also, your welcome :D

Well, I tried your suggestion and ran into a different problem...  :-[

When they have a crossbow in hand, that crossbow does not appear in the list of available weapons that I can manually specify in the equipment portion of the military screen. ;(

Wait for them to stockpile it when they're not hunting, otherwise this might just work for axes/picks :|
