Click profile at the top and some more buttons and some stuff and links and Google and you have an avatar.

Profile -> Modify Profile -> Forum Profile -> Enter the Image URL into the Personalized Picture Field.

First, find an image on the internet you like that isn't offensive. Or upload one at an image site. Make sure you have the DIRECT LINK to the image. AKA the link is to the picture and there's NOTHING ELSE on the screen. Usually there will be a file extension at the end, like .png, .gif, .jpg, etc.

Second, see Profile on the top-right of the screen, beneath Forum Guidelines, on the bar? Click it.

Third, on the left, select Forum Profile.

The first option is for your avatar. The box to the right is the direct link to your avatar. Put in the link to the picture in there.

If the picture does not work, it's likely that you haven't put the direct link to the image.

For example, using my avatar:
Link to a page showing my avatar. This is not a direct link, it WILL NOT work.
Link to my avatar. This is the direct link, it WILL work.

Yes but I didn't fall alseep half way through my explanation.

Also if you're using an image hosted from someone's website, you should do the adult thing and save it and and rehost it from somewhere like Imgur or something.

Or img.ie, as Japa advocates.
Just don't use Tinypic. It doesn't display for me. :P

You have to ask Toady to designate a picture to identify you for all eternity on Bay12. For archive purposes, of course.
