The year is 1806, and the Napoleonic Wars rage on unbound, the last remnant of the old order still resisting Bonaparte's relentless advance.
But in the untamed heart of the land, something is stirring. Children go missing in the deep forests along the Rhine, never to return. Great wolves that speak like men roam the Russian steppe - and even stranger beings, driven on by a witch on her flying pestle. The Ottoman Empire struggles with a revolt in Transylvania, their men disappearing in the night and returning drained of all blood.
Bonaparte has heard enough. Whether superstious trickery or something infinitely worse, it must be dealt with. Gathering bands of men and women from all over his empire and the world with the skills or experience needed to combat this new threat, he sets in motion perhaps the most complicated of his campaigns...
This, my dear friend, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to go monster-hunting in the 19th century! This is also an RTD! I know, I didn't see that coming either! Rules will be explained below.
---
Basic 1d6 RTD rolls apply for the most part. This might be the least complex of my RTDs, huh.
You have a health bar, like this; [IIIIIIIIII]! Combat is done with a good old 1d10vs1d10 and modifiers, attacker dealing as much damage as his roll surpasses the defender's, with a chance for an instant counter-attack in melee combat with a good enough defensive roll.
Whenever you complete a mission, you level up and get to tweak your stats and skills! Hurray!
Name: (Do keep your background in mind for this. I suggest using a site like Behind the Name if you can't think of a real-ish name.)
Gender: (Do keep class in mind for this; if you're a female Officer, you've probably somehow been disguised as a man all this time.)
Role: (See below, four to choose from. I'd prefer if all roles were filled. You are also free to suggest a role of your own.)
Background: (I'd like if you put atleast some effort into this. If you are playing someone from a nation which was at this point Napoleon's enemy, include a good reason why you still got selected. Main enemies at this point were Prussia, Russia, the UK, Saxony, Sweden and Sicily.)
The Preacher
-'Pagan superstition and nonsense. Put your faith in the Lord above, my friends, and all shall become my clear.'
A man of the faith, the Preacher travels armed only with a crucifix and the Holy Book, combating superstition and heresy wherever they may be found. His faith is a shield more potent than any piece of metal and he is determined to see these sinful lands brought back to the true God.
*Innate resistance to magic (Faith)
*Unarmed, but very presence is damaging to inhumans
*8 Health Points: (IIIIIIII)
The Officer
-'Out of my way, peasants! It is about time zis country learned some proper military discipline!'
A devoted leader in one of Napoleon's many armies, the Officer is trained with both musket and sword and a sworn commander of men. Investigating peasant rumours in the countryside may not be his dream position, but when his superiors asked, he was the first to volunteer. He will deal with whatever's going on – whether a real threat or just some imaginative conmen – and return to the war as soon as possible.
*Skilled in both melee and ranged combat
*An officer of Napoleon with all that it entails
*12 Health Points: (IIIIIIIIIIII)
The Woodsman
-'Hrnh.'
Tracker, hunter and survivalist extraordinaire, the Woodsman knows the wilderness like the back of his own hand. On the other hand, he cares little for modern society and even less for bathing, and his accent is so incomprehensible it might as well be another language altogether. Usually venturing out only for trade, he's now been hired to guide these city folks in the wild places of the earth.
*A master tracker, forager and survivalist, capable of pulling through even in the most inhospitable of enviroments
*Estranged from society – doesn't trust civilization, and civilization doesn't trust him
*10 Health Points (IIIIIIIIII)
The Monster Hunter
-'Now, lads, I don't think I've told you about the time I was facing off against the terrifying Were-Pig of Thüringen, have I? Let's see...'
Whether an actual hunter of all things infernal and paganic or a particulary cunning conman, the Monster Hunter has everything you need to combat creatures of evil. Silver bullets, garlic, stakes, strange powders and elixirs – whatever you need, he has it. Ridiculed in cities and treated with distrust at best in the countryside, the Monster Hunter has formed a silver tongue and quick wits, which has saved him from more than one angry mob.
*Has the means and knowledge to defend the people against the creatures of the dark, though his actual experience in these things might be somewhat lacking
*Possesses enough personal charm and a way with words to usually talk his way out of most potentially dangerous situations
*10 Health Points (IIIIIIIIII)
The Spy
-'She's just a curious young woman, General. What's the harm of showing her around camp?"
The whispering knife in the dark-the innocent letter slipped between two people in a crowd-the innocently posed question. Each one can change the course of history. All our tools of the Spy. In these dark times, France uses subtle espionage and information gathering more than ever to seek even a smal advantage over their many foes-and countering their enemies and protecting the Homeland from attempts to do the same to them. The Intelligence arm of Napolean doesn't exactly put much stock in these rumors of strange creatures plaguing the countryside-they merely seek the truth beyond the superstition, perhaps fearing Frances more mundane enemies are spreading this terror, and aiming to a put a stop it, nevertheless-supernatural or not.
*Skilled in both stealth, sabotage, infiltration, subterfuge, and evasion. Does the most damage when striking from an expected angle.
*Has the personal and social skills to worm her way into any level of social strate.
*Serves Napoleon and France, but only from the shadows.
*8 Health Points: (IIIIIIII)
The Surgeon
-"If it's got to come off, the quicker the better, mon fils. Here, drink up, brace yourself, and try to look away..."
As likely to be feared and hated as hoped for and loved, a field surgeon in Napoleon's armies would at least be respected. Some, however, do have a reputation of saving more than others, and a good doctor is certainly a friend worth being able to call on...
If there's one thing the Empire wishes to be based on, it is Reason. And what is more unreasonable than the stories of creatures of the night currently being whispered throughout the far corners of the Empire? Perhaps if these abominations can be investigated, analysed and classified some of the terror of the unknown can be dispelled?
*Skilled in diagnosis, identification, and classification. Some proficiency in healing, surgery, and the latest herbal remedies.
*Has the social skills a man of his class should: able to dance with women, converse with men, and duel with cads – provided he can wash away the blood stains and the smell of death.
*Serves Napoleon, France, and Man
*8 Health Points: (IIIIIIII)
