What's the best Temperature to Embark in?
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:10:58 pm »

Pretty much that. Basic question and all.
I usually go embark in Temperate climates, but recently I've heard that Warm climates are the best choice.
What say you?

Warm. The water doesn't freeze, nor does it evaporate.

If you've got an aquifer and you're good with working with them, Cold can be good, though. Everything staying frozen means no accidental drownings, plus if it's cold enough you can make gobsicles.

Anything where the water freezes and melts is bad. Especially when you have to go over every river and murky pond which you CAN'T SEE because of the snow and mark it Restricted or your dwarves will fall in and die the first spring. SOMEBODY MAKE A DFHACK PLUGIN TO RESTRICT TRAFFIC ON TOP OF WATER. Thank you.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "best". The easiest to embark upon, in my opinion, is a warm climate. No evaporation, no freezing, still opportunities for plenty of lumber.

That said, all climates offer potential for building. Sometimes you want that river to freeze for a little while so you can dam it, other times you never want flowing water to deal with. I think freezing offers the most potential for creative building (especially on a glacier).

Warm is the best because water neither evaporates or freezes. Freezing is good because if you manage to keep your dwarves safe and warm inside a locked, invaders will get frostbites and die before the gates.

Temperate can be okay too, but sometimes the water freezes for a short time, just enough to thaw or become ice when your dwarves are walking over it and kill them.

Yeah, I like Temperate. Ice is interesting to play with and makes re-routing water easier.

I like it when it vaporizes the map.

Go to [HOMEOTHERM:10067] in the RAW files for Standard Creatures.
Increase or decrease for great justice.

Not quite sure that's entirely relevant, but it still leads to !!FUN!!

I usually go for temperate, because I like being able to mess with rivers.  My current fortress' main water supply was excavated, then connected to the frozen river.  When the river thawed, it filled the cistern, with substantially reduced risk to my dwarves.
Uh, I mean, go for scorching, because it's more dorfy.  Yeah.  I totally don't do things safely, because that wouldn't be dorfy at all.

Warm, scorching, or embarking on a glacier. I just can't deal with freezing and melting and freezing again.

Or you could install ramps in all the local ponds. It'd literally only take a few seconds.

Depends on what I'm trying for.

Doing stupid thngs like "Let's Dam the river! Yaaaaay!" = Cold, Temperate or Covered in Lava
Normal gameplay= I'm a fan of "Warm", but that's because I like cutting down rainforests and annoying the elves.
"Heheheh. *SizzleBOOM!* HAHAHAHAHAHA!" = Boiling Cookbook Challenge temperatures.

Just go with freezing, like a Taiga. Lots of trees and ice all year round!
