Are carving knives bugged?
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:51:25 am »

Got two dragon quests in a row. Snuck up on the first dragon and stabbed it in the chest causing the dragon to give in to pain, finished off with a stab to the head.

For the second dragon I just snuck up and stabbed it in the head. One hit kill.

My dude is just a normal hero with dabbling (copper) knife skills WTF?

Not bugged, just set up oddly. Their penetration power isn't high, but it uses a small tip, so it has the effect of having all that power concentrated on a small area, compared to axes/hammers/swords etc... which have all of its power spread across it.

Whips and scourges are the same, they're oddly OP because only a small part of the weapon actually contacts the opponent but hits with the force concentrated into that spot.

It makes sense.

(No seriously, it does.)

think of it, your jamming a knife into a enemy tip first, a knife thats meant to be sharp. while its still OP it sorta makes sense.

whips and scourges dont.

Whips make sense as a symbol of imperialism and cultural dominance.

With decent force, whips can cut stomachs open.
Imagine one wielded by a psychotic green creature.

Imagine one wielded by a psychotic green creature.

Now imagine a leather whip cutting a 6 inch steel plated tank in half.

Seems reasonable...

Yes they do make sense, Df whips and scourges are made of metal spikes.
With decent force, whips can cut stomachs open.
Imagine one wielded by a psychotic green creature.

Now imagine a leather whip cutting a 6 inch steel plated tank in half.
A full metal blade whip could.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcPr-AP1Vss This with a sizable blade at the end and...
whips would accurately  represented, quit being but hurt over that expendable steel peons.

Personally I don't notice whips, because I don't armour most of my Dwarves ;P

That's the thing that separates DF from any other game, if a knife pierces your brain it doesn't matter who was holding it or what it was made of you are no longer alive. If I'm not mistaken the problem with whips is that the game doesn't consider that the small contact area means you aren't being hit with the entire weight of the weapon.
