Habemus Papam!

Our Ruler:  Pope Gregory XVI

Bartolomeo Cappellari was chosen to be the new pope after a long deadlock between the two most likely candidates could not be broken - Cardinals De Gregorio and Pacca were both highly favored but had brought the conclave to a standstill with indecision.  Gregory chose his papal name to reflect the twenty years he spent as an abbot at the San Gregorio monastery on the Caelian Hill of Rome, and was elected mainly as a non-controversial if unexpected choice.

From Wikipedia:

'Pope Gregory and Cardinal Lambruschini opposed basic technological innovations such as gas lighting and railways, believing they would promote commerce and increase the power of the bourgeoisie, leading to demands for liberal reforms which would undermine the monarchical power of the Pope over central Italy.  Gregory in fact banned railways in the Papal States, calling them the "roads to hell."  Under pressure from the French, Gregory was liberal in forgiving imprisoned revolutionaries, a policy which might have aided the final overthrow of Gregory's successor, Pius IX, in 1870.

Gregory XVI made great expenditures for defensive, architectural and engineering works, and was a major patron of learning in the hands of Angelo Mai, Giuseppe Mezzofanti, Gaetano Moroni. However, these large expenditures left the Papal States much weaker financially.'

Of course, that was in the real universe.  In this universe, Cardinal Lambruschini will be suffering a suspicious and fatal accident in the stairwell of the Monastery of Tor de' Specchi.  His Holiness has not yet ruled out a liberal Freemason conspiracy and has tasked the Guard to investigate the embarrassing incident.

In the meantime, a man by the name of Carlo Cristoforo has arrived from Milan to serve as the replacement Cardinal Secretary of State, a position formally regarded as the executor of Papal diplomacy and internal politics.  He is an old acquaintance of His Holiness from their days at the abbey and is known for his works of charity and patronage.  He will be keeping a close eye on those concerned with influencing the Holy See.

Right then, let's get down to it.

Yes.

I accidentally uploaded uncompressed .pngs, sorry.  I replaced the screenshots and hopefully that does the trick.

Surely.  If the College of Cardinals grows more reactionary there's a chance you could be the next pope!  Or the next anti-pope maybe.

I played a couple of game years earlier tonight, and Chapter 2 is forthcoming.

Love this game, my last one I was the U.S. and ate the Americas. (Save the Caribbean, I just stopped caring.)
United States of the Americas.
Needless to say, England was unhappy with me.

Anyways, I would love to be a Liberal Cardinal, help with the cause, and all that.

I'd like to be a cardinal too. A conservative one, whose main skill lies in not dying out of sheer stubbornness.

Jumping on the bandwagon.

I want a liberal cardinal who wants to be all nice and tolerant to people of all creeds...as long as the Holy Land is part of the Papal States of course.

Always found it funny that the word for pope belongs to a feminine declination ;D
