Cardinal Neo was pondering the results of the conclave when he became painfully aware of the cacophony outside. It seemed that the traditions of the Holy See and all of its history meant nothing to the hysterical crowd outside. This, he thought, was most strange, especially that the crowd had begun their antics long before any results could have been announced. In fact, the early manifestation of the riot could mean only one thing, and that was that someone had been aggravating the crowd and stirring them up. Nevertheless, the selection of a pope was not a task given the people, and to give in to the mob would only further undermine the Papacy. If they gave in now, then no Pope would ever hold any power, since they could be easily replaced by the people.

"My papal title shall be Pope Cicero I. The Cicero of ancient Rome was a great orator, and it is a shame that we have lost one of his mighty name to the violence of the streets. Perhaps this name will help me calm the people and bring them back into the grace of God."

"In the mean time, the crowd appears to be getting a bit rowdy. Some devil must have come over them, trying to halt the College's actions. I shall have the Swiss Guard accompany each of us for the next few days, so that no harm may come to us in this time of troubles."

Later that day, Pope Cicero would tell the Captain of the Guard to keep an eye on any cardinals suspected of inciting the riot or aiding the rebel Cicero.

Re: Let's Play Victoria 2: Origin of Nations! - Habemus Papam! (Ch. V)

Stars twinkle the dark skies of early morning above the Sistine Chapel as flames lick at the rooftops of Rome.  The Master of Pontifical Liturgical Ceremonies inscribes the words of the new Pope in a dark, incense-filled room as the new Pope is ushered into a sitting room where he may dwell on the importance of his new position.  He changes into Papal vestments, dons his mozzetta and steps outside to the main balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.

A flood of cheering support erupts from below, the gathered masses surrounded by armed guards, behind them, the raving, torch-wielding rioters throwing their rocks and sticks at the soldiers in antagonistic fervor.

The Protodeacon Prospero Coletti raises his hands to make an announcement:

"Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum:  Habemus Papam!  Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Barbarossa, Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem de la Valetta, qui sibi nomen imposuit Cicero!"

The crowd makes a gleeful uproar, the throng beyond rattles in dissent.  "Urbi et Orbi!" a few voices cry.  The Holy Father must address his people.  It is time for the Apostolic Blessing of Cicero I.

But the security situation is tense at best.  If the mobs break through the line of guards there may be nothing stopping them from tearing down the Vatican.  The decision to speak or not to speak must ultimately be the Pope's.

The Swiss Guard seeks out each of the Cardinals, offering to escort their Eminences through the catacombs below the city to safety.  Some accept and leave without a trace, but many remain.

The LP update is still in the works, but I've uploaded the first release of the mod to Mediafire.  You can download it here (current mod version: 0.11).  Please note that this is for the Vanilla version of V2, I haven't finished updating it for A House Divided.

Spoiler: Mod Readme (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Mod Screenshots (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: List of Nations (click to show/hide)

This is the first public release, there are probably still issues here and there, so if you try it out please let me know if you come across them!  The economy in particular is probably iffy, but not much more so than vanilla V2.

I'm thinking of making new in-game Papal States events for Papal elections based on this conclave.  Thanks everyone, for contributing so much great stuff to this LP.

I like how (ex?) Cardinal Cicero has gone from quietly protesting the imperialism of Rome in a journal to becoming Consul and orchestrating a riot.  I'm not sure if it's common knowledge that Barbarossa is a Pagan animal worshiper, but when such talk reaches the ears of the pious, the new Pope may have to get through a few attempts on his life.

From now on I'll refer to Consul Cicero as Cicero and Pope Cicero I as His Holiness or the Holy Father, or, alternatively, Il Papa.

edit:  darn readme spelling.

edit 2:  Updated the link to a last-minute update to fix a couple problems that got mixed up into in the final archive.
and 3:  Replaced archive with a better readme file and added screenshots.

Pope Cicero? I'd be insulted if I was the Consul right now...Course I'd be insulted to be the Consul right now.

"What? Oh yes...the catacombs. Must be getting back to Jerusalem now after all."

Micelus congratulated the new pope, and quickly left with the Swiss and entered the catacombs.

Sheb was in an inn near the Vatican's gate, looking at the rioters through the windows. Behind him, gloomily drinking a last glass of wine were the Schweizergardes that followed him to form the CCS, 60 or so men of the utmost quality and piety.

"Well, it seems like 1527 all over again" said Sheb, referring to the Sack of Rome, when 147 guards, out of 189, died to protect Pope Clement VII from the troops of Charles the Fifth. "I hope the Swiss that didn't follow us will manage to protect His Holiness without dying this time. Some fine young lads they are."

Turning around he slowly look into the eyes of each of his men. Jan, who signed up to avoid marrying a protestant. Jaques, whose parents couldn't afford to send him to a seminary. Hans, whose family moved to a new plot of land near Tripoli and who was constantly afraid of a weak Pope giving Libya its independence. Otto, that got into trouble after killing a Jew that owned his family's farm and wanted to evict them. All of them were strong, young men, ready to die for His One and True Church.

"However, they surely have the safest job, cushioned as they are by the Palatine and Noble Guard... Ours will be much more dangerous. Consul Cicero, the renegade Cardinal want a war between the Republic and the Church. He's the one riling up the crowd. While our brothers protect His Holiness, we must strike at the roots of the problem. Tonight, we'll kill Cicero."

Finishing his glass, Sheb bend to pick up his sword and pistols. Checking the sword's edge, he put it in its scabbard before exiting the room. Behind him, one by one, in a deathly silence broken only by the occasional roar of the crowds outside, the Conservatives Swiss get up and exit one by one, dispersing into the crowd and going to their appointed post.

"I want nothing to do with this. If Rome burns, I plan to be around to sort through the ashes." said Cardinal Hunt as he followed the Swiss Guard into the Catacombs, intent on leaving the city and laying low until the end of the fighting.

Wow, a new true Roman Republic, and what a better way to start it than with a true Roman revolt.

I'd say that not many people know about Barbarossa's religion, they just haven't asked. I shall continue my ambiguity.

"People of Rome! The College has selected me to become the Pope, but this does not mean that you have no say in our future! The formation of laws is the duty of the Republic, I remind you. Myself and the College are here primarily to make sure that those laws have no influence from the Evil One, and that the laws are in concordance with the holy spirit('s/s') will! To ensure this, the election of the Church's leader must avoid influence, lest hidden demons amongst the crowd bring about a riot or uproar, causing innocent civilians to run rampant and attempt to bring down the Holy Court. There is no doubt that there are evil forces at work, trying to destabilize this fine land in a time of transition. Try to remember; have any beings convinced you to riot upon this day? They may have been disguised as mortal men. They could have pretended to be men you trust, or perhaps men with authority. The most vile likely pretended to be members of the clergy itself! Resist, citizens of Roma! We must remain calm while this evil cloud passes over the Republic."

Well, this is a fine mess they're making. It'll take ages to clean this up once the rioting is over. I don't plan on leaving the Vatican any time soon, although if the rioters do attack I am not particularly inclined to die yet.

When the world war breaks out, conquer Spain!  Those filthy Spaniards need bringing under the Republic's heel for what they did to all of Cardinal Roberto's monasteries.  =P

I was eying Spain, it sounds like a plan  :)  If for no other reason than to halt French expansion into Iberia, his Eminence's holdings notwithstanding.  Getting a land border with France might be extremely risky, depending on how far ahead of their military tech we are.  If we are.  If we fight France then Germany might be the only hope for victory, as the two nations can probably field over million troops between them, leaving us pretty outgunned.

Other than that:  thanks to the fortunate CBs, the safest route to expansion is probably conquering the Ottoman Empire gradually, but that would be hard to do without going over infamy or getting repetitive.  I was thinking of declaring a massive war of liberation against them, freeing six or seven nations near Austria's border - it would give us lots of sphered allies to help take the Italian cores in Austria, prop up Greece, and reduce Turkey enough to be influenced.  Any thoughts?

Sorry about the lack of updates.  I've been sick and haven't felt up to playing very much, but I started a bit on the next one.  Anyone tried the mod out yet?  It shouldn't take too long to update the mod to AHD after the province history files are aligned, but I'll focus on the next chapter first.

I forgot to change the thread title again after a 504 error made me redo the OP.  Sorry about that.

Really!  Unless there's something I'm missing?  I'm not making changes to the 1861 map, if that's what you thought (maybe the Taipeng rebellion in the future) - at this point I just have to append the changes to pops, country histories and localizations, and divide China up - eventually Great Qing should look something more like this.

Edit:  I just remembered not to estimate on completion times.  ^_^  Forgive me, I'm still sick.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!  In celebration of this contrivance pushing the sale of mass-produced candies and paper products, let us solemnly remember St. Valentine who was beheaded by the Roman Emperor Claudius for the crime of helping Christians to marry.
