Nothing fundamentally wrong with colouring pencils. They're not my favourite, but you can do great things with them. Just make sure to use artist-grade pencils not preschool-grade pencils. :P

Your composition is messy and cluttered, to put it bluntly. Nearly everything is happening in almost the centre of the image, without any way of drawing the viewer's eye. Having a detailed background that doesn't clutter is an artform in itself, mainly revolving around tricking the viewer into not looking at it as much as the focus.

I'm too out of it right now to explain composition well, but if you search around a bit you should be able to find some decent stuff.

I've not attempted to colour any of the things I've drawn in. How would I go about it? Colouring pencils seem imprecise in my imagination, but I suppose I'm wrong to eschew them?

Out of curiosity, have you considered doing hybrid pieces? (Using a computer for some of it) Or at least playing with concepts for color/background/etc on a software medium before actually committing them to the immutable paper of reality.

It's a good way to do prototyping without redoing the original concept from scratch. I ask because I just spent the last 45 minutes tearing bits out of your image and fiddling with them.

I haven't considered it, because I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. Plus, I don't have the software which I assume costs money. Sounds interesting, though.

Also, I'm interested in your fiddling. Care to share?

GIMP, Krita, Inkscape. All free, all have extensive online documentation and tutorials.

Used GIMP, totally free.

Spoiler: Partial Color Splash (click to show/hide)

I was just toying with colors, but you can use it to experiment with literally anything in the image that you want to change.

I also think Krita development has been making great progress lately. It might outdo gimp when it comes to digital art now.

Huh, really? Might have to check it out again. It's never been able to overcome my ridiculous amount of practice with GIMP.

That's a pretty awesome screen. I dig it.

That looks really cool Draignean.

It does. Certainly an improvement!

One thing: The fact that there's that one foot jutting out like it's coming off the page renders the entire thing much creepier than intended :P

Made a little starship.

I tend to visualise starships a lot like submarines, especially in Aurora 4X. It's a pretty good soft to medium Sci-Fi equivolent, I think.

I'm quite happy with it, but I'm really having some second thoughts about that warp propeller. Welp, useful to know for next time.

I actually really like the idea of using a propeller-esque system for warp travel. My thought was more along the lines of turbine blades extending from a bearing in the middle of the hull, but it strikes me as an interesting style in general.
