Thanks! And yeah, I got a soft-spot for cyborgs :p

Here's a thing I did for a Dark Heresy game I'm about to run.

Spoiler: Rocks (click to show/hide)
I'm learning how to use ZBrush, a 3d sculpting program. It's similar in some ways to Mudbox, which is what I've used in the past, but it has a ton of features that Mudbox doesn't have. It also has the most backwards-seeming interface I have ever used. All of the UI quirks and oddities have purposes once you learn how to use it, but trying to transition from Maya to ZBrush is a pain in the ass.

Anyways, here are some rocks. Crudely sculpted in ZBrush, retopologized in Maya, baked with xNormal, textured in Photoshop, and rendered with Mental Ray.

I bet you could fit GIMP, blender, artrage, and inkscape in your workflow too, if you tried hard enough.

I double-dog dare you.

So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Should I also learn how to model in 3ds Max so that I can sculpt things in ZBrush, retop them in 3ds Max, UV map them in Blender, texture them in Photoshop, Artrage, and Inkscape (can't use just one for such an important task), rig them in Maya, them animate them in Source Filmmaker?

Also, another thing that still needs work, but I'm not happy with how it's turning out, so I'm calling it done.

I'm assuming you were trying to capture the expression of shock.

My tip:

Move the eyebrows so they are more like this:  :-[

rather than this:  >:(

I hope you have smileys turned on.

I wasn't aiming for shock - more like apathy or resignation.

Then you should probably close his mouth. For some reason his mouth is open.

Those are some gorgeous rocks.

I only wish Zbrush didn't cost $700+

Thanks! And yeah, ZBrush has a pretty exorbitant price tag that I will refrain from commenting on further because I am an upstanding citizen and definitely not criminal scum. Definitely. Right.

I'm not too interested in making 3D models but I do want to know how to make textures FOR 3D models. Any advice on where I should start when it comes to learning about how to do that?

IMO the face is fine, but he's very stiff, and his expression is blank. He seems like he should look thoughtful, or as if he's coming to a sudden realization.

Given you lot are all admirable artsy people, are there any tutorial video series you'd recommend for an absolute beginner? I mean, 'I can barely make stick men' beginner.
