How do you draw hands? Mech/suit hands, to be precise. Diagram plix! Thank you!

When drawing hands you can start with a 3D trapezoid for the palm, use elongated 3D rectangles for the fingers, then round out the edges to make them more natural. Here are some diagrams showing that particular technique.

For mech/suit hands, I would exclude the final step and stick to the sharp shapes you used as a guide. If you're having a hard time finding references for specific hand poses, don't be afraid to look at your own hands! Keep a phone camera at the ready, take a picture of your own hand, then use that as a reference.

Search Sycra on YouTube. He has around four videos dedicated to hands, plus a wealth of other digital and traditional drawing tutorials. One of his hand videos is about dynamic hands, so once you've gotten how to draw hands, watch that too.

Good thing you warned or I would have been violently spooped.
Instead I'm mildly spooped.

Goodness. I was not expecting THAT.  :o
Very spoopy, Shook.
Something seems wrong with the upper row of teeth, though.
Hee hee. Yeah, the upper teeth definitely aren't as they should be (i think i fucked up the perspective on them), so i miiiiiight rework them if i feel for more spoopage.

Also @Shook: I've been watching you ever since you started posting here :P The development is ossum! [Would love tips on progress, public or otherwise x_x]
Mucho thanko Tir. <3
I guess my own primary tip for not stagnating completely is to acknowledge the mistakes you make and try to avoid them next time (and/or do a little bit better than last time), but at the same time, don't get too hung up on them. I don't know what the general consensus is regarding "fix mistake in old doodle" versus "make new doodle while attempting to avoid old mistake", but i certainly prefer the latter. After all, we learn from our mistakes, and making more doodles means more mistakes in a shorter time, and thus, faster learning. :v

Not really. His point as I saw it was that you learn by making mistakes, and don't make new mistakes to learn from while fixing previous mistakes. I think other things are applicable if you really just need to practice drawing, but if you're already reasonably comfortable with it, then yeah.

Spot on. Of course, what works for people varies (the above is just what works for me), so your mileage may vary. :v

I agree with Shook there. When I'm done with a drawing I leave it at that. If I see a mistake I'll make another and try to avoid that mistake, then compare the new with the old.

On an unrelated note, how do you guys feel about hosting drawing prompts and competitions here? Like in the Writer's Apprenticeship thread.

Why not, I haven't drawn for a couple days (or maybe even weeks) so it would be nice to have a half-decent excuse to do it again.
Also I wouldn't mind having a drawing succession game again (ie. have a bunch of people in a queue, settle on a theme, start drawing, pass the result* to the next person until we get to the last person and feast our eyes upon the amalgamation of artstyles and skill levels)

* - for the sake of preserving layers and some degree of image complexity I would prefer if people used something like the Photoshop doc format (.psd) because it seems to be the only format out there that supports layers with some degree of inter-compatibility (as far as I'm aware it's supported by (duh) PS, SAI, GIMP, Krita and even Paint.NET though you do need a plugin.).

We used to have that in the Engravers guild, but then it kinda died completely.

Issue is, for all the enthusiasm people usually show for participating in stuff like that, it usually dies out after a run or two of doing it, which is understandable, if dissappointing.

I miiight be interested.

Unrelated:

Gender and facial features left as an exercise for the reader.

Edit: now with cavalry. I think the horse came out unreasonably well, given I haven't drawn one in years, and I'm pretty happy with the rider, too, given I didn't bother to reference.

Note to self: Improve on drawing eyes, paws, long lines, circles, sketches, paws, circles, tails, noses, paws, fur effect, and the whole thing. Also really improve on paws and circles. (You're not seeing any circles right now but sketching this thing was at least half of the time spent into this, getting an egg-shaped oval is HARD when you're not used to taking it slowly!)

What do you think of it? For comparison, this one right here was the first drawing, the one you're looking at now is my second drawing.

They're hardly even comparable due to the vast difference in stylization, but with that said, i like this one a lot more. It is... Well, cute. :v
Disregarding obvious stylistic choices, there is still one thing i must mention: The ears. As seen on Wikipedia once more, fox ears seem to be protuding from the head in a mostly triangular manner, and have a scoop-like shape to funnel ALL THE SOUNDS into the head of the creature. While they're usually also fairly big on real foxes, relative size can vary a lot with cartoony deformation, so that's not terribly important.

[/mountainoutofmolehill]

Ooo, i like it/them! The only glaring issue i can spot is that the upper part of the horses hind leg is waaaaaaaay too thin, since horses tend to have rather buff backsides. Smaller nitpicks include: Infantrybro seems stiff (some lenience granted because obviously standing at attention), legs seem a bit too straight, and i am every so slightly bothered by the feet pointing in the exact same direction (and one boot seems taller than the other arblgf my non-existent OCD). Also, horse riders butt is too pointy. Almost all butts have a nice and round curve to them. :v
