It's been a while since I posted. Figured this was as good a place to start back as any.

Holy shit.
I mean, the... ground, I think? and the water don't look great, but that pocketwatch looks amazing.
Ground is just a background (you can see "trees" reflecting off the pocketwatch - that's the same thing), the water is actually a flat marble-textured plane. I didn't really put much effort into that. :P

Welp. Back to practicing with me. I am gonna leave this here, though:
Spoiler: One last render (click to show/hide)
Dude, I can't model humans for shit. :P I was actually very impressed with that. Plus, I think your renderer just doesn't look quite as flashy as 3ds max's does, which is part of it. Don't be hard on yourself. Yours is pretty awesome too.

Glad you guys like it. :)

HawaiianJon: I don't suppose we might get some details as to what's going on in this dream? :P Other than it looks like someone is getting hung from a wall. The face is actually quite good.

Scanned a couple of the yu-gi-oh cards I drew in school recently. I have more, but in my opinion, these two look a decent deal better than the previous ones.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nice. I used to draw cards like that too when I was in primary school. Yours are better though.

I HAD A DREAM... AND I DREW THIS DREAM.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wish my dreams were coherent enough for me to draw :c
It's hard to draw something when it exist in two completely different states at the same time.

What happened in the dream was that I was dragged into a building that was French-Italian influenced; The captors tied my arms down and weighed down my legs as to keep me in the water.
The rest of it got very weird and foggy; like the steam in the picture.
(I was contemplating making it just me being held up, but I wanted to recreate the dream in a PG-13 sense... again, it got weird.)

Thanks! I think I really need more practice drawing females though.
I have the same issue. I always practice drawing with basic human body shapes, and it's easier to make them rougher and blockier than add subtle curves. Such is life. :\

Welcome back!

And holy crap that is an awesome rendering. I am impressed.

Thanks! But I can say with 100% certainty that the lack of flashiness is a combination of intentional stylistic decisions and user limitations (translation: me being bad and not wanting to overextend my abilities, instead aiming for a cohesive scene) rather than any technical limitation on RenderMan's part.

I drew a vaguely Mayan thing:

*snop*

When I first saw that image it resized on me and I was like "woah, is it animated?" for a second. Realized it wasn't, so had to do it myself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Woulda added smoke coming from the thing if I wanted to be crazy about it.

Maybe color the water a different color from the rest of the map so it stands out?

Another character doodle in lieu of updating a story.

Also, flannel/plaid is not as hard to draw as I thought but still pretty annoying.

@Caroline: Maybe give the rivers an outline? I don't know, probably just me, but only the rivers are fuzzy while everything else has a solid outline.

The rivers probably would look better with a dark blue outline. But it is a very nice map. There's something incredibly fun about drawing that style of mountains on a parchment texture.

Great work! I especially like your forest design. The mountains are really well-done, too.

Protip for next time you make a map, though: it looks better if you have a more harshly shaped continent. Don't feel like you have to be conservative in your continent design--experiment a little.

Nice map. Worth the wait :P Really like the forests.

But yeah, to put the critical hat on for advice:
The rivers clash slightly, and could do with being a little sharper.
Coastlines are generally really jagged, fractal things. Feel free to go more fjords on them.
The sea could do with a little colour, as it somewhat clashes with the coloured mountains etc...
And that's all I really have.

As for names, I regularly come up with some compound word (for example, for a mountainous region maybe rockspires) and then start translating it into an amalgam of dead languages. The problem comes when people notice :P

And there's chaos when push comes to shove, but it's music to my ears.

Grump Whale would make a great children's book.
