For a while now, I've been planning on running a new illustrated suggestion adventure, except by 'illustrated', I actually mean 'rendered'. I thought I'd finally learned what I needed to know to create a decent enough scene to use for the game. Then I attempted to create a landscape in Maya and remembered that there's always, 100% of the time, without exception, something in my way that I actually needed to know but didn't know I needed to know.

Long story short (not really short, sorry about that), I looked into new software that would fill this heretofore unknown niche and discovered Vue. It's a bit like ZBrush, but specifically for scenery: landscapes, water, plants and rocks, clouds and skies, and so on. Apparently it was used in the making of How To Train Your Dragon 2, Avatar, Kung Fu Panda, and a whole bunch of other movies.

Preliminary testing to figure out what I'm doing with this thing. I'm not sure where the grain is coming from - I think Vue might have another handful of quality settings separate from Mental Ray's own. I'll figure it out soon enough.

Vue goes from 'pretty good' to 'world-class' depending on what type you're using.  It's pretty great.

They are indeed. Solaire, Tarkus, Oscar and Lautrec fought their way through the teletubby hordes, occasionally encountering monsters such as Shrek and trying to avoid disturbing Princess Peach.

It was an odd game.

Seems like it, yeah. The contrast from a randomly clicked-together scene thrown up on YouTube (that still manages to look decent just by dint of how great Vue's rendering is) to, say, Avatar's landscapes is staggering. I wish I had stumbled across this sooner, but I guess you don't know what you don't know until you know it.

Seems like it, yeah. Reminds me of some early games I've seen in the 2000's >_> This map looks very nice with these memories interfering.

I think it's the water that acts as that memory cue there.
