Fiddled around with inversions and contrasting those inversions with the original again in gimp. Took a surreal piece of art someone made that I found on the internets and did photo editing. Can't say I did anything really apart from some basic manipulation to see how it looks, but I think it looks cool.

I also was playing with inversion modifier and made a sea monster :D then i colored it.

Some of you guys may remember when I posted this a while ago. Just yesterday I got hit with some inspiration, and completely redid the design.
They now wear armor slightly like that of a samurai, with a Scottish-style bastard sword. They all still have unique masks, and some still wear hoods. Overall I'm much more satisfied with what they look like, and I feel like the war-mages (which I've now renamed to the sentoki, being what google translate led me to believe is fighter in Japanese) are a lot more interesting as a result.

Never played Nethack, so you're right on that. I don't actually get the reference beyond knowledge of Nethack being a thing.

No conscious inspiration, though, just iteration on some thoughts that came to mind.
