It has a lot to do with lighting and how it interacts with skin (and just about everything else). This is the best art tutorial I've come across about making your characters more life-like and avoiding that deadened clay-look.

Testing aforementioned Krita, I made a (fantasy) map!
Not quite to the usual level of detail I do, so blocks ensue - particularly as this is the first computer city level map done for a long time.

Brown = Residential
Red = Markets/shops
Blue = Workshops etc
Green = Storage
Black = (from top left to right, excluding walls) - City hall/Palace, Watchtower/Military training ground, shipbuilder (bottom left), Sea temple, Docks

It's pretty poor, but I'm rather poor with mouse-drawing.

For something that's done with a mouse, it looks good.
Better than whatever I've tried to do with the mouse in any other drawing program, anyhow. :V

Oh yes, Arne's tutorial is an excellent one, and is actually among the things that have influenced my doodling. Fun thing though, his paintings also tend to have a clay-like look to them, although the two obvious differences are that A: he's actually extremely competent, and B: he does it on purpose. For the most part, i think what i'm doing wrong is choice of colours, because skin does have a fairly similar shading to clay (it's dull, but less bumpy). Groo's skin tone here is almost exactly the same as the example of a boring skin tone here, so basically i need to use more vibrant colours. But hey, making mistakes is how you learn. :U

Probably yes, although his legs actually do make up about half his standing height, the bottom of his torso is just obscured by the hide armour. With that said, i sketched him really quickly, and human anatomy isn't one of my strong points, so it's very likely that i messed up more than just the legs.

Speaking of coloring, ohh how I hate coloring; I can practice every other thing, but find painting to be incredibly frustrating for some reason or another.

Anyways, I made this like two weeks ago and posted it on the Cataclysm:dda forums, wanted to see if I could nail a nice cartoonish simple style coloring, I ended up with this:



It surprised me that it ended that well, as I hardly ever paint my stuff, a good first attempt I think, still have to get a better idea of how to balance tones and saturations, and I just realized I didnt even bother with the shoes, that sucks.

Thanks! Now I only need to learn how to pull it off in a more consistent basis. But at least im half-ways there.
