Breaking the arty trend of the thread but here is a tour of something I'm working on in my new home (my embark area has a brook, sand and deep soil as well as nearby caves  :D);

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivxQh0xtVqY

I'm procrastinating on the more complex/ difficult shapes that will finish the roof and left side at 0:15. The next phase will be to finish installing the two textured crack machines bordering the empty space at 0:54 and add center bracing and another t-nutted panel over the bracing.

Haven't made any progress lately due to summer, a very leaky torque converter seal and worn torque converter bushing in my 4x4 and illness flare-up.  :(

It's taken a while, but I think I've got a goblin aesthetic that I'm mostly satisfied with.  I was trying to get something recognizable, but without the D&D look, or the Green Goblin maniacal grin.  This is sort of a compromise of realism and fantasy imagery.  The color is there mostly for clarity.

Step 1: Learn how to make magma flows.
Step 2: Cover it all up with clouds.

It's been a silly day.

EDIT: So I'm trying to get some thunderstorms going in those clouds and give them some depth so they look like weather instead of just haze. Any tips on how to do this? Tutorials* are notoriously lacking, and futzing about with layer styles and filters has thus far yielded nothing but crap.

*There are tons on making lightning effects, but they tend to rely on difference clouds and assume you're viewing a strike from ground-level. I can get something vaguely workable, but the bolts have a tendency to loop into circles. I'd also prefer not to have to hand-paint each fork, but whatever I can get I suppose. There's also nothing I've been able to find on the cloud texture front.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

HELL EVERYTHING ON THIS PAGE DESERVES MENTION BUT THIS IS UNUSUAL

That is probably the most awesome way you could possibly make use of your walls. I have to admit that i am a bit jelly, the house i'm living in is rather ordinary. :P

So I added a proper texture to the lava, to give me something productive to do in lieu of the cloud experimentations. Holy shit, yes. Thinking I might want to tone down the squiggles now.

EDIT: Also, climbing wall is best wall.

I might have the correct stuff to draw, but I don't have the stuff to color with. But hey, had to try anyways.

This is awful.

Star generator.

Operational.

I hooked up a simplex noise generator to an RNG, so the noise value generated by the location determines the likelyhood of a star being generated. Makes really nice clusters that have denser cores and a few outlying stars.

It does have a mind of it's own though. I have no input into the shapes of the clusters besides their average size. But overall it seems to be working pretty well. I might even keep the debug display as a minimap.

That sentence makes me feel all fuzzy inside. Not because of technical reasons. Just the certainty that there are problems out there which can be solved by hooking up a noise generator to an RNG.
