So, in your all's opinion, what are the hardest types of sites to embark on?  I recently embarked on a desert island that had a scorching temperature, but ironically it turned out to be the most bountiful and prosperous fortress I've had.  Turns out being on an island means no one can get to you, and it's been 20 dorf years and the only problem I've had is an enraged honey badge on year three.  That's it.

That's what I expected, but never-the-less my dwarfs happily went about their business and not once did I ever see a heat related problem.

Oh well, there's definitely no melting.  I've abandoned my island fort and am going off in search of funner areas.

Well there was once this juicy embark I found, no trees, completely flat and intersected a savage biome and a haunted one. And it was scorching, water evaporated hilariously quickly. And I had the no digging (bar quarries) rule on...

I don't know if it was the biome, or the fact that few ground dwellers rarely bothered me, but so many flying things... Over the walls...

Drinking my Dwarves's blood.

I'll try gen a scorching desert and post it up here ;P
We could end up with a cookbook for the most inhospitable Dwarf embarks.

Terrifying forests and savannahs are notoriously tricky, especially savannahs. Forests have teams of giant, skeletal bears and tigers, but savannahs have the dreaded skeletal elephants, rhinos and hippos, the last of which always come in large groups, swim and are incredibly aggressive. I have managed to populate a savannah though; the trick is to immediately dig a hole, move your dwarfs and supplies into it and quickly close it back up. You can make an actual entrance to the outside next year when the caravan comes around (that is if they aren't set upon by monsters).

I've all ready spawned near a Skeletal Yeti, let's see if the legendary Axeman I embarked with can deal with him.

Err... here's a question regarding my glacier fort.  How come my miner won't dig down past a certain z-level now?  He just gives up at a certain level shortly below the surface of the glacier now.

EDIT:  Problem solved, I think.  For some reason he wasn't fond of digging at a certain patch of mudstone, but I moved him over a bit and he went down.

Doesn't matter now.  They're all dead.

Also, note:  Skeletal Yeti's are very mean.  It ran over and killed my farmer, STOLE HIS PIGTAIL MITTEN, then proceeded to beat the rest of my dwarfs to death with the farmer's old mitten, including my axedwarf.  Hit her so hard in the head with the mitten it knocked her head off.
