Your sheriff or CoG will only use the crossbow like a club, while shooting enemies. So if you have 9 of those, then you can have a 9 man squad

Speaking of, no matter the usefulness of an artifact I've NEVER had a non-possession on any of my blacksmiths, meaning I have a whole lot of -Bronze Greaves- armoring my dwarves.

Also, I punish my artifact makers if they disapoint me (read: at my leisure) by burning their creations in magma. Or erasing them from existence.
