ok, i need help, and i wish i could be more specific.

here's how adventure mode goes for me every time.
1- make a character
2- talk to people in town and get a quest.
3- start walking toward the quest
4- continue walking as night falls
5- get massacred by bogeymen before sunrise.
6- repeat.

what am i missing here?

Either...

a. Your world is a jerk for giving you quests longer than a day's travel from the start (to-and-fro time doesn't count)
solution: get some peasants to help.

or

b. You're missing the target location
solution: look harder on the map, it's really hard to find and really easy to miss when you're not paying attention.

I've never managed to get anyone to join me.
i ask all the time, but no one's ever said yes.
what makes that more likely?

Erm...

Not too sure on that myself.

Experience dictates that the more quests you do the more people you can recruit, but I don't know any specifics. sorry. :(

Sleep in town until dawn, travel to the location. Stay awake at night, still no guarantees you will be protected against bogeymen. Travel with peasants if possible, bogeymen will not attack you if you sleep whilst others are guard you, or if you're inside some where safe. Bogeymen also don't spawn on mountains.

I find it very rewarding to take my peasant adventurer into the mountains immediately, hacking apart the wolves and mandrills for food, then moving onto giant eagles...

The adventurer that returns is now strapped with muscle, skill and layers of lard :P
(Admittedly my adventurer was already legendary when I embarked my mountain peak challenge  ::))

Kill the Bogeymen.
As Viciously as Possible.

Optionally, hide in a Town like a Coward. :D

Grind sneaking and throwing. Plus you might be able to get some peasants. (and their profession has to be peasant, not cheese maker or smith or something.) Boogey men won't attack you if you have comanions.

They don't spawn on beaches either.

I think they spawn on the ocean if it's frozen over though. I seem to remember fighting Boggeymen in the dawn then drownig after the ocean thawed. IT could be the spawned on the coast though and chased me. Oh and if you take the sneaking path stay perfectly still and wait the night out with the {.} key, because they spawn all around you and unless it's a full moon if you move they'll see you before you see them.

If you're a skilled ambusher though, they won't notice you even if you're on top of them. Hacking their limbs off. With a shovel.

Having trouble trying to survive against bogeys? Here's your options:

- Sleep in town before nightfall.
- Recruit peasants in town.
- Go to a fort, recruit soldiers in the fort.
- Find a cave, and go sleep in it (careful, there might be inhabitants.).

If you can't do the above for a variety of reasons, you can just run while the bogeys are on your tail, and wait till night ends. Note that this path takes a very, very long time to finish, and you might get bored with running away while waiting for the sun to rise. Also, if you're going to do this, you can't fast travel ever, while you have enemies on your tail.

You can just opt to hack their limbs off instead, if you can afford to do that.

Also, they're faster than you. And also teleport. So you'll have to occasionally charge into them or they intercept you and hack you to pieces. Or if you're skilled enough, the opposite happens.

Cheat and mod in an uber creature. :D

Alternatively, face them off like a man and hope you kill them all.

I kill them for fun ;P

There's certain amusement when you jump into a fox hole, sneak away and proceed to beat them at their own game. Or beat them to death with their own severed limbs. Although they seemed to be skilled enough that a legendary swordsmen occasionally misses/is blocked, and a novice never hits.
