[176.38a] Cooking with booze SEVERELY BUGGED
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:23:00 pm »

I know that the all-booze prepared meals is considered odd, but i dont see a fix for this in the update log...

What happens is that every time my cook attempts to make a prepared meal with only booze, the booze:
1. Gets their quantities combined
2. Is transformed into a type of booze that was used
3. Impossible to drink because it will no longer fit into a barrel

And as an added bonus:
4. Prepared meals made entirely from booze made before the update ... Turns into a puddle which gets cleaned.

[And as a SUPER added bonus:]
Any meal cooked with booze is effected in the above manner.
Presumably ANY amount of booze will ruin any attempt at cooking with it.

I had this same problem.  It wasn't just my 'all booze' meals, though.  For some reason, all my meals created with ANY drink seem to not work.  What happends is that, as you said, all values are combined, but they then end up undrinkable, sitting in the kitchen as Dwarven Wine, but not as a puddle.  If I see it's description, it says "This is a stack of 27 Dwarven Wine" or "This is a stack of 78 Dwarven Wine", ect.  These dwarven wine do not count as drinkable.  When examined in the status window, it still says I have only around 100 booze and 20 food (and that 100 booze is entirely accounted for by the 125 booze in barrels in my booze stockpile)...

I can confirm that cooking with booze in any way, shape, or form is completely screwed.

Just now i attempted to triple-coat a single plump helmet seed with wine, and the attempt to do so failed as described above.  :(

That's what you people get for relying on roasts made of beer for so long.

Finally... now there only lacks the need for water in brewing, then it's perfect.

A question through... a meal that has only a part booze (like meat + wine) .. will it be made and is it eatable?

I can't complain, for admittedly I used that booze cooking loophole to buy out human caravans in my first years, so I am guilty of exploiting it.  But the fact remains, the program now has a bug.  No, no food with booze, from my experience, seems to work.  I had even one which could have fit in a barrel (size 7) that was inedible/unusable, made with 4 units of dwarven rum as one of it's ingrediants.
This is begining to be particularly annoying for I have many brewable plants modded in, and I don't always pay attention to the whole thing as much as I should, I just have it set to brew the heck out of anything brewable, but the the alcohols then produced are often set, at first production, to cookable, and it uses them in the next meal.  Oops, there went my entire first harvest of Cladina, while I was off tending the magma foundry's establishment.  No food for you, Dwarfy Stumpydumble, until spring, because all the meat and cladina powders were cooked with single units of aquavit, being produced at the same time from the farm to the still.

On an unrelated note, though, I would like to praise Toady: I don't know what you did to cause it, but as of this release, the program seems to have doubled in speed.  I love it!

I've got this too, same as above.  Wondered why they were all bloody starving...

Just to add icing to this cake, when I set my miners out a-huntin', they tracked down groundhogs across the map and then:

Doobry Suchandsuch, Miner, cancels Hunt: interrupted by groundhog.

Assuming I wasn't doing anything silly, that's a pretty good bug.   :)

Yeah, when I fixed the missing temperature info for prepared meals for the last update, reality took over.  Until I fix cooking in general, I've now thrown in a hack that turns the base material for the food back into plants.

Hi!

Personally, I think it would be good if any new food available in the fortress defaulted to be non-cook and non-brew instead of cook and brew in the kitchen settings. This way, people would have better control over what gets used in cooking and such accidents do not happen.

This is especially dangerous in early phases where you may gather plants which result in until then not-heard-of drinks available to ruin your cooking.

Just my thought on this.

stopped booze food from melting, even though it probably should

I have to say, that booze food should NOT melt!  Have you ever had a Guinness?  I'm surprised that stuff is even liquid, and I'm sure dwarves can repeat the feat.

But I digress, food with booze cooked on it is great!  Prime rib cooked with even cheap Keystone comes out really tender and tastes wonderful.  I'd be pissed if the yeast in the beer ate the ribs before I could get to them, but that doesn't happen.

Melted booze-food can't be stored in barrels.

Guinness can.

I always thought it to be generally assumed that cooking in the kitchen used pots and stuff, hence why booze could be used for cooking at all... and thus shoudln;t just melt onto the floor...
