[.33b] no more outside contact
« on: November 17, 2007, 03:52:00 pm »

I've been playing a game I started under version .33a.  I've been playing it about a year under .33b now, and since switching to .33b, I have had no contact with other civilizations.  No kobold or goblin thieves, no traders of any race, no immigrants.  I had regular contact of this sort in the previous version.  The other civilizations still show up in my 'c'ivilization screen, they just don't visit anymore.

GauHelldragon on #bay12games has seen the same symptoms.

It might just take a while.

I wouldn't trust the "contacts" screen, though. When I set out to my current fort, it claimed the only contacts were the dwarves of Ren Avuz, but to date I've seen human traders(wagons and all), elven traders, human diplomats, dwarven caravan and liasons, kobold thieves and goblin snatchers and finally goblin sieges.

Same symptom here.
No more contact since updating and two season passed (summer and autumn), not even a Kobold thief. If it wasn't for the caravans, I would enjoy those peacefull moments.  :)
Good luck for the debugging.

yeah I also have not seen anything, not even a thief since updating. 2 years have passed.  I was regularly getting visits from everyone before.
Oh, and zero immigrants, although I'm still getting frequent births.  My pop cap is left at default 200 and I'm at around 30 something.

Same here, playing a save from before the upgrade (the one I posted earlier as having the Merchant Prince crash bug).  It didn't crash, and the humans showed up, but they were the last thing to ever do so.  Now I'm 2+ years later and I've not seen so much as an immigrant wave (I have 86 dwarves in my fortress, with the max pop at the default 200) since.  No traders, no sieges, a couple random animals but no humanoid attackers.

I'll add another "The traders still show up for me in 33b" just so it doesn't look like traders are completely broken. :P

Check your contacts screen again, and it'll list all of those now. That's how it works, it shows only those you've actually met.

The traders do show up. The problem seems to exist only in saved games from previous versions. I don't mind, I started a new fort anyway.  :)

I don't, as a rule, get attached to anything I create in any alpha-stage WIP project.

I'm getting goblin master thieves under (b) who show up deep in my fortress and put my children in cages!

I noticed, but before embarking it only listed dwarves. So basically, pre-embark screen is useless.

I thought if you pressed Tab enough before embarking, one of the screens showed every race you're in contact with.. or at least the humans, elves, and dwarves

Yes, but like I said, it can't be trusted.

When Toady fixes this, think of the immigration wave.  I'm going to stock up on food and drink now so I have a massive, massive stockpile.  I think I'll also get started on carving out even more extra rooms, cabinets, and beds than I usually have ready.

I doubt they add up. It's more likely to be a matter of enabled/disabled, so any that would've arrived when it was disabled are completely ignored.
