Dwarf Fortress Wiki Help
« on: December 31, 2011, 03:33:54 pm »

About an hour ago, I was browsing the df.magmawiki.com for information on the creature raws. Immediately after opening up the Creature mannerism token page, a virus bypassed my browser's download protection and proceeded to shutdown my all of my programs.

The virus said it was Windows Vista anti-virus or anti-spyware 2012... I dealt with it accordingly. Still running more scans to be sure. I'm also 100% positive that this was not hidden away on my computer yesterday.

Is this from an ad, and is this to be expected from the site? The only other things I had running in other tabs were this forum, Youtube, and Gmail. I don't believe this has happened, and I have used the wiki many times before.

Any help or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd contact the wiki administrators, this is something they'll want to hear about.

Worth knowing about and investigating, but I'm willing to bet whatever it was didn't originate with an ad or anything else on our wiki.  Trojans, by definition, discretely infect a system, hide for awhile, and worry about doing something later and as quietly as they can.  Something you have open at the time doesn't necessarily have any meaningful effect on when trojans become active.

Don't be so 100% positive something isn't or wasn't there now or before.  I don't care if the best anti-virus system in the world just scanned your system and found nothing, that is no assurance that nothing is there.

If you care that much, install a good ad-block.  Malicious software can be installed just by loading up the offending ad or whatever without actually doing anything with it.  The easiest way to deal with that is with blockers that stop things you don't want from loading in the first place.

I checked the wiki page you mentioned and nothing special here, checked the code too.
Could be either some ad (which I doubt) or more likely it was already in your computer.
By the way what browser and which version are you using? Stuff randomly downloading and executing on your computer just shouldn't happen, seriously.

Thank you and everyone for the assistance.
I'm using the currently using Firefox 8.0.
No, I have not torrented anything recently, nor have I even downloaded any files.

I simply found the event to be strange because it happened immediately after loading that page.
