Back to the topic: Echoing a bit of what MrWiggles said, not even the Mayans predicted a 2012 end of the world. It's just one of those memetic tumors that people take as quasi-legitimate just because it managed to accrue enough steam and popularity, which... causes it to become more popular.

I still think it's dumb though. Somewhat amusing, but dumb. Some of the doomsday theories are pretty creative, but this is like "MAYANS SAID IT, FAGBUTT". Nobody even bothers explaining how it will happen (or maybe my dgaf-level has reached a point where I overlook everything, either way works).
