It's time for a NEW COMBAT TUTORIAL!

Credit goes to Dexexe who I shamelessly stole this idea from. But hey, I'm paying 10 USD a month for use of his brainwaves!

Each battle arena is seperate into six (or less) ZONES. These zones dictate what actions a character can perform on their allies and enemies. Each side (allies and enemies) have their own MELEE ZONE, MEDIUM ZONE and MAGI ZONE. The allies' MELEE ZONE always is right next to the enemies' MELEE ZONE.

Melee (Range 1) attacks can only be made against the zones directly adjacent to your zone. For example, Fuzz and the two front Koopabots can attack each other, but none of the Koopabots can harm Zelda! Because of this, it's ideal to keep characters who can soak up damage the best in the MELEE ZONE!

Characters in the Medium and Magi zones are protected from attacks as long as there is an ally in the zone ahead of them. These characters cannot make melee attacks, but they can make ranged attacks. For example, Zelda can make a ranged attack against either of the two nearest Koopabots. However, due to the zone-based protection, she cannot target the Koopabot in the back with most abilities!

For the sake of this tutorial battle, the Koopabots only have two zones.

Spoiler: Major and Minor Actions (click to show/hide)

Each character in battle can make one Major Action and one Minor Action per turn. Major actions include consuming a mushroom, attacking, using most active abilities and anything else that would take a decent amount of time. Minor actions include shifting zones (which will be covered later), Link passively searching for fairies and anything else that can be done in combat that wouldn't take much time.

Note that a character's major action may be exchanged for an extra minor action (but not the other way around). For example, Fuzz could move backward and cast a fireball or move backwards two zones at once, but he could not cast two fireballs in one turn.

Spoiler: Shifting (click to show/hide)

Shifting is a minor action that any healthy character can take. It consists of shifting into an adjacent zone. Note that you cannot shift into a zone occupied by enemies! You can, however, shift into a zone occupied by allies.

In an effort to make this game more needlessly complicated, everyone now has D&D attributes. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution, Charisma. For each two points above or below 10, these attributes gain or lose one point in their "modifier". So a character with a STR/Strength of 16 would have +3 as their "Strength modifier). Many rolls will be subtly modified by these small bonuses or penalties, but it's not something you as a player have to worry about much.

FUZZ is a little rusty, but he knocks his foe down to low health with the shoddy Waverider replica and his patented POWER STRIKE. The topmost Koopabot looks dazed, and probably would be if it weren't animatronic! Zelda casts a HOLY ARMOR spell on Fuzz, preventing him from taking major damage for three turns!



The Koopabots all immediately retreat into their shells and retaliate with a SHELL SPIN! Thankfully, Fuzz's HOLY ARMOR protects him from most of the damage. The Koopabot in the back fails to get his attack off.

Zelda casts PRAYER I, invoking the spirit of Farore and doubling the party's direct damage output for two turns with the power of FARORE'S COURAGE! Fuzz takes this opportunity to strike the bottom Koopabot with a FIREBALL. The Koopabot fails his CON save, taking SIX damage from the attack and THREE damage from being on fire! It crashes to the floor, defeated.



The other two Koopabots remain uncreative with their attacks and pull off two more SHELL SPINS on Fuzz, reducing him to 2 health! Oh no!

Zelda doesn't have enough MP, Fuzz can't activate fireball and neither have healing abilities.

MP does not regen during battle, at least at the moment.

Let me give you an example action set that could be used:

Fuzz: Attack the remaining Koopa then shift back to Medium Zone.

Zelda: Shift to Melee Zone then attack the topmost Koopa (if it's alive, of course).

FUZZ takes his last action before shifting to the medium row. He successfully nails the topmost Koopabot with a EIGHT DAMAGE slash! Despite his protests, Zelda manages to take over the front row for him. He still doesn't think this is a good idea.



Zelda, shifted forward to the Medium Zone, notices the topmost Koopabot is now non-functional. She puts an attack on the other one in her ACTION QUEUE anyway, predicting it will shift forward this turn. Much to her non-surprise, it does! Zelda takes FIVE DAMAGE from its SHELL SPIN, but prepares to attack afterwards.



Zelda unleashes her CUTE ONE via the ACTION QUEUE! The last remaining Koopabot takes TWELVE DAMAGE. It falls apart! Farore's blessing runs out, but it was enough to win this battle for the team.



After walking for a few moments, ZELDA and FUZZ come to the exit of the DETAINMENT CHAMBER. They could just escape the volcano and have the HEROES come re-take the Fire Star later... or risk facing worse opposition and try to shut down the KOOPA TROOP by completing their original mission. Which would they do?

While they think about it, Fuzz notices a SAVE POINT overhead. Handy!
