Flying fortress megaproject

Hello fellow dwarfs!

I've decided to make my first megaproject in DF. I thought of big "floating" fortress in shape of steampunkish flying ship, propelled by some kind of magic. I wanted to collect the fuel for "journey" or build engine out of "something special", but it is kinda hard to think up something clever and not too hard(like luring FB into engine core) or too easy(ie. dwarven water engine) to make or acquire. I will be grateful if you could give me some ideas. I rather not want to use blue metal, because it would cause too much additional FUN. I'll use the Genesis mod, so you can choose one of materials from there. I am also not afraid of modding, so it can be made in custom workshop from custom things. Ideas for challenges apart from gathering fuel/building engine are also appreciated.

Your floating boat should have lot's of siege engines all around, so it can shoot in all directions.

Since you're already having engines for the sake of roleplaying, why not use windmills for power?  Place them on the outside and they'll look like propellers or rotors.  Also, you need to have a "first class" deck for your favorite dwarves (and maybe the nobles), complete with statue gardens, swimming pools, and a classy lounge (too musical instruments aren't functional).

Dwarves passing by get good thoughts from the mist of water and exploding felines.
Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

Your project sounds somewhat similar, so there may be inspiration.

It would have been faster to construct it above ground, but it was a fun project to hollow out everything below it down to the first cavern.

My problem with this fort is what to do next, so I really like your 'steam punk' idea. Digging this much has given me tons of gems, so I'm thinking about creating 'engine animations' with multicolored gem windows.

I know that should be obvious response to my question, but i am pumping out magma in each fort (of course my flying fortress wil have the magma container too).

@dragoncurse: At first i considered it "too hard", because i never tried obsidian casting before, but... on second thought, it could be pretty interesting. And of course FUN. Can i name main engineer after you? :)

Maybe if it turn into something interesting i'll post the story.

Also make your custom workshop [BUILDING_WORKSHOP:PILOT]

Then, if you 'q' over the pilot's seat, the only option in the workshop will be "Drive Ship (d)". If you choose that, a dwarf with the mechanics labor will go sit in the pilot's seat for a few seconds.
Build gem windows around such workshop. Gem widows made from more than one type of gems will change colors like some kind of monitor.

Nah, I was just offline.

Flying fortress constructed by digging out to the magma sea, so that there is no world but the sea. And the fortress standing high on it's pillar of adamantine.
