Death Sentence Injustice!
« on: December 28, 2011, 07:29:09 am »

Hey guys I'm new :) that's not the point, my question is how serious is racketeering? The leader of the LCS Isaac Isaacson was given the death sentence by a conservative jury, he only committed this crime once and it was his first offence. Surely there is something wrong with this and does anyone have tips on how to kidnap and enlighten judges and lawyers?

LCS is meant to be over-the-top. You WILL be executed for almost every crime at Arch Convservative Death Sentence laws.

Oh I beg to differ, I believe that with high enough law skill I can get away with murder and if I do I will post my evidence! Mr.Justice-turtle away!

Not in a corrupt court system you can't. The judge is there to tell you to die, not to decide if you'll die. Besides, there's always breakouts!

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Every crime can be punished by death in Arch-Conservative society, regardless of its severity -- if you get convicted. If you're playing on Nightmare mode (or have dragged the game out and the laws backslid into C+ territory), that's why.

Racketeering is a crime used in the real world against mafia bosses and other organized crime leaders, investors, and conspirators. It's designed to convict people who engage in organized crime but don't directly carry out the crimes, or who could be charged with conspiracy but would be hard to convict, or who could only be sentenced for a relatively short amount of time given the evidence collected against them. It's a powerful charge because it carries a heavy sentence (20 years in prison in the real world) and doesn't require that the person charged be directly connected to any one specific crime carried out by the organization. They can even be a mere investor that knows almost nothing about the day-to-day criminal activities, as long as they keep reinvesting their ill-gotten gains in the criminal organization. In short, racketeering is a legal sledgehammer for breaking up the higher ranks of organized crime.

In LCS, racketeering is used in a similar manner. It's the scary charge you get when a recruiter is ratted out by a subordinate. It's the way the government can get to an otherwise squeaky clean LCS founder, and is why it pays to be careful about who reports directly to important people you want to protect. You can prevent ratting out by rescuing people from the police lock-up before the interrogation is finished, or by ensuring the people captured have high heart, low wisdom, and plenty of juice. In Arch-Conservative society (as in Nightmare mode), interrogations are very violent and are much more likely to break your Liberals.

Not true. If the judge is lenient, he can send you off to re-education. And judges are always lenient if they are sleepers. Judges can also be lenient if you defend yourself well.

Suggestion: If you plea guilty, you should have a higher chance of a judge turning lenient.

I haven't looked at the code or anything, but I think that is how things work now.

As near as I can tell from the code, pleading guilty gives a 2:3 shot of the judge giving leniency.  Incidentally, the code also says that sleeper judges will always give leniency... if you were convicted at trial.  If you plead guilty, it skips the trial code and doesn't check if the judge was a sleeper.  Moral of the story, no matter what, if you have a sleeper judge, do not plead guilty.
